This is 6x4x6 groups of chunks, each chunk being 16x16x16 "blocks." I figure the player would have the final say on what size playfield they want, but do you think this would be a good starting middle ground? Not massive, but not tiny either. Enough room to build some sprawling forts, and to build vertically. I'll probably raise the base height more and give you some more room to go down, too. Just have a minimum of 2 or 3 chunks below the surface.
Spent the day doing optimizations and reworking some functions to speed things up. Larger maps run muuuuuuuch more smoothly now. I could probably go larger than this, too.
Oh, and heightmaps. Don’t think I have a video of that up yet.
Think I’m going to leave the sides like this for now, then add an XRay toggle later to let you see lower floors.

I want to see what it would take to translate Dwarf Fortress's world into 3d, so I started making it. I haven't bothered with the heightmap data yet, just the actual mesh generation and management. This is 2x2x2 chunks of 4x4x4 blocks. Small for easy testing. Every chunk only renders faces that are visible. You can also change the “level” you’re on which shows you that level and those below it. I figure this will let you jump up and down easily enough to see what dorfs are up to on lower levels. Should the outside faces be shown for the world? If not, you could see caves underneath the surface, which would be pretty cool.
I made a thing. Procedural icosahedron that I can subdivide however many times.
