just an old sketch that i still kinda like..!! this was for a group project involving a campy silver-age style team of explorers called Science Team O.V.E.R.A.L.L.S. (Observation, Vision, Experimentation, Revision, Application, Love and Live for Science!) the whole thing was pretty bonkers tbh but i had a lot of fun working on it haha.
i was in charge of the design for the archaeopteryx animal sidekick, named Archy, duh. i guess i didn’t do that great of a job with the design because i ended up having to be the one to draw him in on every panel he appeared in, lmfao :’V whatever, i like drawing him anyway so IT’S FINE...!! lovable goof

this is a preview of my submission to the JAN ✰ KEN ✰ PON fanzine @jankenpon-fanzine!! school and other stresses meant my piece had to be a bit simpler than i’d planned but i’m still reasonably pleased with how it came out... gotta show my love for my anime wife... and also gotta get back into practice with watercolors..!
please keep an eye out for the fanzine, releasing within the next couple of months! it’s going to be available for digital download for free, and i’m very excited about it!
some objects drawn in a style emulation of Tove Jansson, part of this assignment done last semester! i just really like how the train came out haha
this is a project from way back in the fall semester! we were each assigned a newspaper cartoonist and had to draw a set of autobiographical strips in the style of that cartoonist. my cartoonist was Tove Jansson, creator of the Moomin comics. i had never read Moomin before, but i became sort of obsessed with it over the course of this project! Tove Jansson was a truly amazing artist and i recommend everyone check out her work for themselves!
despite being really silly, these strips are pretty accurately autobio in a way, haha.
my friend and recent CCS alum kotaline was also assigned Tove Jansson when she did this project in her first year-- you can see her strips here! she makes a guest appearance in my last strip, which is drawn near-verbatim from a real conversation.

it’s been a really long time since i’ve posted anything on my art blog, but that is going to change really soon! i’m going to be uploading some of the work i’ve done over the course of my first semester at CCS tonight; most of it will probably be individual pages and illustrations rather than complete comics, since there are a lot of things i want to spruce up a little before i post them in their entirety. finished comics will be coming eventually though, so stay tuned!~
THE ANTHOLOGY IS DONE!!! this is the project my group has been working on for the past few weeks! we each created 8 pages of comics featuring VERY different interpretations of a "devil" theme, then created just under fifty hand-bound (yes, hand-bound!) copies of our book.
one of the biggest challenges of this project was getting the book design just right-- we had to tread a very fine line of not allowing the final product to become cartoonish or gaudy, while also not making the book look boring! we also really couldn't use the classic visual elements associated with "the devil"- horns, cloven hooves, fire, etc.- since all our stories and interpretations of the theme are so different, and using those symbols would be limiting or not fit the overall tone of the book. originally we were going to screen print the "and he shall appear" subtitle in a gloss medium, but i'm super happy we went with the toner-on-black-stock look instead. only needing to screen print one pass instead of two or more was much less work, and left fewer opportunities for something to go wrong! the whole thing looks SUPER slick, i'm very proud of what my group accomplished! i'll probably upload my own comic from the anthology tomorrow or Friday, so stay tuned!
my contribution to the CCS HALLOWZINE! these little dudes were drawn for a class assignment and i was pretty fond of them. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
a followup to my last post: two versions of a self-portrait i did for a screen printing project at school, and the version that i ended up using!
i learned a lot about screen printing over the course of this project– mostly what NOT to do when screen printing. i was really torn between which version of the art i wanted to go with, since the one with the facial features has a way different vibe from the blank one. in the end i’m glad i went with the one i did, because including EVEN MORE details would have been an absolute nightmare. you can really see in the final print how a lot of the lines got SUPER muddy or dropped out entirely. the right hand in particular got majorly fucked up on pretty much all the prints, and the toenails only showed up on like half the ones i pulled. still, i feel relatively okay about the finished product, esp. the color choices.
re. the drawing itself: besides being kind of a fun aesthetic thing, the eye (and its placement) is representative of some personal shit that i’ve been working through for a while. i would like to have a big creepy eyeball on my gut for numerous reasons.
HEY! it’s been a long time, guys! i’ve been working hard during my first month at the Center for Cartoon Studies, and i’m trying to get to the point where i can handle internet duties again as well, but it’s kind of slow going, haha. +_+ since i’m procrastinating on a project right now, though, have one of the first projects i did for school!
this was an autobio comic i did for our year’s facebook, which is kinda like a yearbook/catalogue-of-students. i’m pretty pleased overall with how this turned out, and it communicates exactly what i want it to. so, success!
