TW: Death mention
I rejoined the vet med field a few months ago. It had been going relatively well and moving clinics seemed to have made a world of difference.
That is until my coworker literally died and before they even told me she had died they asked me to cover her shift.
Then, you know, they told me she died.
What a fucking shit show of capitalism right there for you.
I ended up leaving the veterinary field. Between up and coming health issues, the clients, the burnout, and most of all, the extreme fatigue. I just couldn’t do it.
Sorry for the break. It’s been a rough month. Compassion fatigue is real y’all and it’s making me seriously consider leaving the field. We have a client who went into the local Facebook pages and started slandering us for his dog not recovering from something properly (they let a cast get wet then wrapped it with duct tape and now the leg healed improperly) and now it’s like mob mentality with people joining in on the thread and not giving the whole story. There’s people on there who just say we’re in it for the money and all of that jazz.
It’s rough.
Why can’t coworkers just show up and work?
O: Yeah, so I need you to fill my dogs prescription of levothyroxine and can I make it a three month supply?
Me:*After confirming in the chart that we can do that* yeah we can absolutely do that for you. Will you be picking up tomorrow or today? If you pick up today it will have a rush refill fee of $5.
O: Well, I’m in your parking lot. Of course I want it today.
Me: okay that will be a $5 rush refill fee.
O: Fine whatever.
Me: okay just come on up to the window and we’ll get you checked out then while they’re counting.
*180 levothyroxine proceeds to get counted. O looks at receipt while waiting for medications to be counted.*
O: Why did you charge me a $5 rush refill fee?
Me: since it is a same day refill we have a $5 fee. This is due to the fact that we normally count medication refills at closing and don’t need to pull someone away from either reception or from the doctors to count medications.
O: You never told me there would be a fee.
No, I am not going to bother my doctor on their day off to give you a call about a question that can be easily answered by my other doctor on staff. It isn’t a unique case that that specific doctor needs to answer on, it’s just a general question.
The state that I live in is relaxing a lot of COVID precautions but our office is following corporate guidelines and still requiring masks. The clients, my god, the clients are the worst.
We’re curbside and a client was upset when we didn’t see them in their car. They parked by the employee cars and didn’t tell us that they were there. They yelled at at the receptionists when they finally called to let us know that they were there.
A client called in a medication refill five minutes to close and was upset when we told her she could pick it up Monday.
Coworkers keep calling out, it’s just making the rest of us more stressed because we’re short staffed.
Of course it’s a fucking weekend and we have a client who is upset that we are the only vet in the area that’s open on Saturday and they waited all week to get their lethargic cat to the vet and we’re full.
O: your toenail trims used to be $5.
They haven’t visited us since 2012. *face palm*
O: my 10 week unvaccinated puppy is experiencing diarrhea. I like taking it on walks around town and he was acting like he didn’t want to go today. I want an appointment.
Me: we can certainly get them in for an urgent exam today. Based off the symptoms described we will want to perform a parvo test outside in the car to rule out parvo before bringing them inside for an exam.
O: it’s not parvo, I googled it. Just so you know he is not experiencing any bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and he’s still eating. Those are symptoms of parvo.
Me: yes, I know. Sometimes only one or two symptoms present at the beginning. We would just like to rule that out.
O: I’m just going to monitor because he doesn’t have parvo then.
O later left a review stating that their dog had parvo that was diagnosed by another clinic and we never did anything about it.
Client lost their mind over a price change since they last saw us. Yeah... that was back in 2017. Of fucking course we’ve had price changes.
We’re curbside and many people in our county are opening again because of what the CDC said. Clients are losing their minds because our building is at capacity with us inside. They don’t even see us as people.
No, if you want OFA to certify your pet they need to be over 24 months old. No, you can’t yell at the receptionist because your sire that you would like to use for the bitch currently in heat isn’t certified because he’s 23 months old. We can’t change OFA’s rules. We offered the preliminary but advised it would be best to wait the two weeks until he’s 24 months old and still somehow this was our fault that she couldn’t breed them.
