BUT OH FUCK SOIL ORGANIC MATTER MY BABY. provides so many good nutrients for plant and microorganisms and measuring it is so simple, you basically just burn off all the organic matter until you're left with straight up dry dumb non-nutrious soil then subtract what you lost and BAM, % lost on ignition (LOI). there is a linear equation associated with it which is %LOI*0.7-0.23= %Soil OM

but guys guys, tragic shit. since colonization of the america's, only about 4% of rivercane remains. which is why conservation is so important!!

so, I urge you, if you see a patch of rivercane, dig up a part of a chute and transport it to another nearby river. if you can find seed (which is difficult since they don't seed super often), PLANT IT. care for it, support it. Rivercane is awesome and deserves so so so much love.
