There are two types of British TV shows: the kind that run thirty episodes across twenty years; and the kind that have produced an episode a day, without interruption, since 1960. There is no middle-ground.

A fair generalisation!

I think it’s because a lot of our shows are still the product of individuals, rather than a writers teams, which limits how many episode can be produced a year and how often they are made (as the writer may have other projects they want to do also). And such programmes don’t sign up their stars on exclusive contracts either, so THEY may be unavailable too!

British soaps and continuing dramas aren’t dependant on any one writer, hence they can keep churning out the episodes. Indeed the writers for such dramas (Coronation Street, Eastenders, Casualty etc) are largely unknown. And the actors are signed up to be largely exclusive to that show too
