A Boy's Heart On our way to a field trip we saw a homeless man sitting on the ground, a cement wall behind him. After we passed my recently adopted 13 year old son asked, "Can we go back and give him some money?". I asked if he felt directed by Lord and he said he did. Out of curiosity, I asked if he was donating my money or his own and said his own. We turned around and spent some time with Gary. He's disabled and waiting for some paperwork to go through for Social Security. We gave Gary some money and described some local resources. Gary was deeply touched since he had no sign and wasn't panhandling. He said, "You didn't have to stop. Thank you. Means a lot." After prayer and hugs, I thought we would continue to pray for Gary. Once we arrived at the field trip, one of the moms approached me to say she saw us ministering to Gary and that she and her sons were touched by it. As I get to know my son, I'm truly blessed and my heart is full. His situation has been difficult, at best, yet he's sensitive to the needs of others. Fishing is his passion. Apparently, he loves more than one kind of fishing.
Rodney Matthews - Once you get past the fact that you’re rummaging through some deceased stranger’s personal belongings, estate sales can be one of the most interesting ways to come by some pretty cool stuff. This is how I stumbled across this book of art by fantasy and scifi illustrator Rodney Matthews. You may be more familiar with his work from album covers and posters, which is how I became aware of his art as well being influenced by his typographic design back in my early years of drawing. But other than his typography, I really liked his whimsical style and surreal landscapes. Fantasy art has always been my favorite genre of art and Matthews is right along up there on my list of favorite fantasy artists like Boris Vellajo and Michael Parkes. To see more of his work check out: http://rodneymatthews.com.
Yup. My 13 yr old son has had this book of Matthews art for many years. I just adopted him. He loves to draw and is really talented. Great kid.
Worst and Best
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way — in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
Stop, Start, Continue
The start of a new year is a great time for a simple exercise called “Stop, Start, Continue”. Pull together some team members and make three columns on a dry erase board. Write Stop at the top of the first column and talk about activities that don’t add value anymore that the group would like to stop doing. Write Start at the top of the second column and discuss new activities the team would like to try. Consider when you would start them. Then write Continue at the top of the last column and list activities that have value that the team wish to continue. Use the exercise as an opportunity to learn and make changes. This exercise works well for families as well. I didn’t invent this, just a good practice I picked up over the years. What techniques do you find useful for starting a new year?
The evidence of God's existence and His gift is more than compelling, but those who insist that they have no need of Him or it will always find ways to discount the offer. ~Pascal
Is Twitter just for the entertainment industry?
During #BREW2012 at Pennington Biomedical, Prof. Kenneth Eilertsen, President and Founder of NuPotential, Inc. mentioned a new biomedical market called Epigenomics. Out of curiosity, I searched for "Epigenomics" on Twitter to find a dozen tweets in the last week using that keyword. There will likely always be more tweets related to sports and "Housewives". However, there is almost no brilliant cutting edge topic that isn't being talked about on Twitter. Strategic opportunities abound.
1. Rework by Jason Fried and Heinemeir Hansson
I’m actually pretty embarrassed that I didn’t read Rework much sooner. It is the first book anyone should read if they want to succeed in business today. It’s an awesome handbook for play-by-play instructions on how to build your business the...
Good list of books for any serious entrepreneur. Jason is pretty sharp.
U.S. Marines 237th Birthday
From the Halls of Montezuma, To the shores of Tripoli; We fight our country's battles In the air, on land, and sea; First to fight for right and freedom And to keep our honor clean: We are proud to claim the title Of United States Marine. Our flag's unfurled to every breeze From dawn to setting sun; We have fought in every clime and place Where we could take a gun; In the snow of far-off Northern lands And in sunny tropic scenes; You will find us always on the job The United States Marines. Here's health to you and to our Corps Which we are proud to serve; In many a strife we've fought for life And never lost our nerve; If the Army and the Navy Ever look on Heaven’s scenes; They will find the streets are guarded By United States Marines.
Practice Greatness
Great minds have noble objections, have purposes, and daring dreams. Average minds engage themselves in wishful thinking and petty dabblings in little ventures, small minds are content to complain why life has passed them by.
How to volunteer in Staten Island tomorrow
From the Staten Island Ferry, take the SI Rapid Transit to the Oakwood station and walk down Guyon Ave to Mill Road.
Meet at 9:00am on Mill Road near Guyon Avenue in Oakwood. If you drive, do not park inside Miller Field as those lots will be used as a FEMA staging area.
If you have cleanup equipment like push brooms, rakes, shovels, work gloves, and garbage bags, please bring them. Supplies are extremely limited, so if you can bring your own it would be very helpful.
Take Action
"The critical step lay not in finding the perfect program or in waiting for national education reform, but in taking action; picking a good program; instilling the fanatic discipline to make relentless, iterative progress; and staying with the program long enough to generate sustained results." ~Jim Collins, Great by Choice
This Cleggumentary is a great story about strength and achieving.

Confidence for Achievement
If you're hesitant to proceed, inconsistent, or you don't feel confident in your actions it might be because you aren't sure what you're trying to accomplish and why.
