Derek Myers and His Daily Dose Of Miniature Art

Derek Myers is a proactive artist, his latest project involving sketching out a drawing a day for one year, using a felt pen. The creative series features beautiful natural landscape which is framed by geometric patterns and designs. 

By utilizing the paper as a texture to create the rough natural element such as snow or stone, the detailed scenes of the wild become tamed and restrained within the symmetrical framework of lines and shapes. His compositions are reminiscent old tattoo work, with their monochrome tint and depth of meaning. Find his work in his Etsy shop.

There’s an adorable, nerdy quality about this book. Mim is an unforgettable character who will frustrate you and make you laugh out loud simultaneously. Although heartbreak is coexistent with humor, you never stop loving Mim. She’s the type of girl who references Lord of the Rings and talks to herself. These are some of our favorite Mim quotes:

“I am a collection of oddities, a circus of neurons and electrons: my heart is the ringmaster, my soul is the trapeze artist, and the world is my audience. It sounds strange because it is, and it is, because I am strange.”

“Exactly why I don’t have a boyfriend,“ I whisper, turning to the window. Because you’ve referenced The Lord of the Rings twice before lunch, or because you’re talking to yourself? I have to admit, I’ve got me there.”

Overall her heart-wrenching journey makes her our favorite YA heroine of 2015 so far. Although the book portrays a sense of young adult realism, you are immediately transported to another world. For a debut novel, David Arnold’s prose is indescribable, and we say this as an outstanding compliment. 

P.S.: If you can’t stand YA literature or find it it juvenile, this will be the book to change your mind.
