Marcus had had phone calls to the radio station all morning. People wanted news, they wanted comfort, they wanted someone to listen to their concerns. To tell them that everything was okay in their small town. He decided to make his way down to the scene in the centre of town, to see everything for himself. Maybe he needed that for himself too, it was his home.
He spotted Ray and raised a brow. He made his way towards the line. “Hey, old man,” he joked lightly. “I mean, it doesn’t exactly look great. You being over there. You know people are saying it’s a crime scene? What are you up to behind there?”
Ray sighed, “Yeah, I heard.” The longer he had mulled over his grief and the past he had started listening to the irrational part of himself. He’d bought an old school radio tuning into the police chatter on nights he worked himself ragged. He’d heard the call go out and heard the scrambled confusion about how fast the fire was moving. Of course this was a crime scene.
“I just, needed to see for myself. I needed to...” And it was just a theory so he wouldn’t voice it yet, but he’d gotten something in his head and it was driving him crazy. “I’m not going to miss something this time.” He said, “Not with this fire.”

Harriet had made her way to the town hall when she’d heard the news. There was no way she could sleep and she needed to be out there. She noticed Ray in the crowd and started to follow the older man. “Not bad… just why are you over there?” She looked at him. “What if you get hurt? And you don’t want to mess with any evidence. What if someone did this on purpose?”
Ray looked around and noticed people rounding the corner, so he rushed back over to Harriet and back past the caution tape.
“I know, I know.” Ray whispered, “But that’s all I’ve been able to think about. I just thought if I could take a look, get some pictures, I don’t know maybe I could make a connection... find something I missed all those years ago.” Ray said, slowly losing steam as he realized he probably sounded crazy.
raphicoolidge:
He heard the man, hell he felt a tinge of a punch to the gut when Julian’s visions were mentioned—partially because he felt for a the man who’d lost his other half and part for the surefire grin, laugh, the bouquet of flowers he would’ve received from Julian himself once the motel was up and running should he still be in the picture, “I do know the visions, just take a look…I don’t think you’ll hate it. I don’t think he’d hate it.” He said, tapping the binder he’d set down in a rhythmic manner, in tune with his swig of the cold beer before sitting comfortably cross legged on the dusty and plastic covered flooring.
“It’s inevitable. This place is a sanctuary, it’s always been a sanctuary, it’s only now getting it’s due acknowledgement. The pushback too is inevitable. The process of development can only be pushed off for so long… it’s better to change. Move forward. Way I see it, it benefits everyone really. The festival’s just the start. The motel too, in a couple years has a lot of potential. And I mean a lot, people want that local feel, this place could offer that. No doubt about it.” He told the man through swigs, relaxing his legs then too out of criss-cross, “But yeah- sure, there’s a lot of pushback now…down the road though. Can’t see how it doesn’t benefit everyone really…”
Ray brought the binder closer, was taken by the weight of the thing, very light for how heavy the situation felt. “Of course, I’ll take a look. I wish I could promise that I’ll be objective about this, but I think I left all my objectivity when I left journalism.” He joked.
“A couple of years.” Ray nodded, Julian had had plans, of that he was sure, just hadn’t had the time to enact them, let alone tell him half of them. And yes he was a little bitter about that, which is why he’d even accepted meeting with Raphi in the first place. He drank from his bottle.
“I’m not opposed to change, but I get being wary of it. Reported on my fair share of gentrified projects that only really benefited the developers, you know. Julian, he didn’t really talk much about his family but I got the distinct feeling he was trying to do something different than his folks.” Ray shrugged, “Maybe that’s why he specifically wanted this place. Like you said, to protect the local feel of the place. I don’t know.” He sighed, finishing off his beer.
Raphi sounded sincere and honest, so Ray asked, “Had you been looking into buying this place?” Ray found out Julian had staked his claim on the motel quite a few years ago when he took the project over, probably keeping it off the market with the plan to remodel it when they moved back.

Ray was sleep deprived. The official reopening date was coming up for the motel and he’d been working around the clock to get everything ready. So maybe he wasn’t in his right mind as he crossed the caution tape very early one morning after the fire.
He wasn’t even a few steps onto the City Hall premises when he heard someone behind him. Ray put up his gloved hands, “I know this looks bad, just let me explain.”
harrietxanders:
Harriet smiled gently, she hoped she was making Ray feel better, even somewhat. “Is it a lot of work? Maybe you could find someone to help you? Honestly I would offer up my brother,” she said, looking over him. “Or maybe… what if you’re just missing him?” she added gently. “Though,” she paused. “Yeah, I have thought it… about the fire. I don’t even know what it is, just something.”
“But hey, don’t go doing that to yourself, okay? You’re not alone here.”
“You’re brother needs a job?” Ray said, with a soft smile, but he nodded knowing she had a point. He did miss Julian, "But I’ve been missing him since day one. If it’s only going to get worse, I don’t know how I’m going to be able to stand it.” He said, less sad than he was frustrated by the thought.
“So you agree.” He breathed out a sigh of relief. “I’m glad I’m not the only one. I’d be the last one to want this to be true, if only because it meant I did such a shit job back then, but I think it’s what’s weighing on my mind.”
Raymond nodded. “I knew I came to the right person.” He said, complimenting her.
mariahhkenmore:
“Well, it’s always best to leave it to them, isn’t it?” Mariah nodded. “Your father was in the sciences? What kind of science did he do?” She always loved hearing about other scientists and their careers and experiments. “It all seems very exciting be a journalist. It’s not something I can handle, but I bet you were very good at it.” she nodded. “I will!” Mariah smiled. “I watch space documentaries and listen to podcasts all the time unless Sabrina is in the car then we listen to nursery rhymes and classical music. It’s good for her growing brain according to my father. He’s a pediatrician.”
“It’s good start though, Ray. You’ll finish in time and like you said you do have some locals already using your rooms so you’re already making money, right?” she offered. She had made a note of the strip club across the street. She wasn’t oppose to those types of places. Her ex had been in a lot of those places and even took her to a few. She had been quite shocked by them, but it was part of the nature of his business. “I could help out sometimes. I used to host parties with my ex. I’m somewhat hospitable and it would help me grow. I’m smart. I can figure things out. My neighbors also say that I should do more things that involve other adults instead of being around Sabrina all the time.” she shrugged softly. Besides, the money she makes from it could help build some more survival money for her and Sabrina if they have to pick up and leave quickly again.
Mariah’s face dropped as she looked at her lap. “They did have a few good reasons in hindsight. I think I was a bit too naive. He…he was my first everything so…I didn’t see the same things they did I guess.” she shrugged. “I’d be happy to join as long as I can bring Sabrina sometimes.” she smiled. “Wow, game nights are very interesting. Do you think you would be able to find other board game lovers out there?” she asked before sipping some of her juice pouch. “Risk and Cataan wow….you guys are major strategists. I’m an only child so I got to always choose the game we played when I was little. That was a perk of being an only child, the con was sometimes having to play by yourself or your stuffed animals.”
“Can’t argue with that logic.” Ray said, chuckling. “He was a nuclear scientist, actually. Big advocate on moving us towards more nuclear reactors and less renewable energy. I can see his point, but find the populace isn’t necessarily ready for that talk again.” He said, of his eccentric father. “He’s adjunct professor now, but helped study the radiation aftereffects in and around nuclear testing sites.”
“I’m sure she’s way ahead of her classmates, huh? Wish my dad had been helpful, but as a professor he really couldn’t talk to us kids to well until after we started forming complete sentences. He abhorred baby talk.” He chuckled, thinking of what his dad had been with his baby sister. “Well, throw some podcasts my way, I need something to pass the time as I work. Marcus is only so interesting while I strip paint.” He laughed.
Ray nodded, not elaborating much. At this point it would be years before he broke even, “Yeah, it’s certainly not hurting to have a couple of rooms still open.” He found the business side of things incredibly boring, a complete opposite of his husbands brain and training for it.
“It actually would be a great help, to have someone help at the front desk. We could figure out the hospitable hospitality together, I certainly need the practice until I get this place running a little more self-sufficiently. Then I can actually retire.” He said, a laugh turning into a groan as he rubbed his face.
“That kid is going to be the biggest nerd.” Ray teased, but of course. “You are both cordially invited to Ray’s Big Gay-me Night.” It would be funnier on the sign, he was sure. “And there are all sorts around here I’ve found. I think we’ll find some die-hards, no problem.”
“I’d always dreamed of being an only child, if only to not have to share the damn bathroom with seven other people. No I have 15 all to myself.” He laughed, between the five kids and his mom and dad, he wondered how they’d survived in the tiny house.
ohxchris:
Chris’ brows furrowed, unsure what to say with the sentence that was phrased to him. But he laughed at the sentence that followed, his hands pushing into his pockets as he walked round the side of the motel. “Does it really feel wrong? Or did you just realised it’s going to be harder work then you thought?” He asked seriously.
He sighed, rubbing his head at the mention of his brother. “You could never fail Julian. He loved you. He chose you. Sell this place, don’t sell this place… it wouldn’t matter. He would still love you.” He nodded, so sure of his words. “But i can say… Julian was my brother. I… knew him our whole lives. And in that time he was never wrong. Not once. My parents hated it.” He chuckled. “Julian was sure about you. And that’s how I know you can do this… because he knew you could.”
Ray frowned, crossing his arms in defense. “Certainly. I’ve done only one thing for almost thirty years, I knew it was going to be hard. And okay, maybe I’m dragging my feet on these renovations.” He admitted, knowing it was easier than the whole logistics side of things. “I’m just... I’m missing something, I just know it.” He said almost a whisper because, god he sounded ridiculous.
Ray laughed, couldn’t help but have the mirth bubble out of him, happy tears prickling at his eyes at the description of Julian. “God, that makes a lot of sense. I mostly thought he was joking when he pulled that line. Infallible, huh.” The tension in his chest lifted and he rolled his shoulders.
It was hard not to feel like he was the last resort, when he’d only heard of this project in the last few months of it all, but Chris wasn’t wrong. He should be more annoyed at the self assurance of the Janssens, if he hadn’t fallen in love with Julian for such a trait.
“Alright, fine.” He said, loosening up. “It’s all very tell tale heart, I know. Like I’m going to pull up a floorboard find a deadman.” He laughed. “I guess I’m just lamenting how much I missed out on.”

Jonah glanced over the other, hoping he was okay as he sat beside him on the bench. “Sort of?” he repeated, eyes falling to his hand. “Have you had that looked at properly? How bad is it?” he asked him. “Hey, it’s okay to have doubt sometimes. Believe me, I know that. But this project is yours, it’s coming along great. And I mean it, my offer. If you need help with anything.”
“You loved him? He loved you? You knew him and he cared for you. It’s not about what he wanted. You’re here, you have to do what you want. And what’s right for you. He’d be happy that you’re happy.”
Ray nodded and reassured about his hand. “Clinic discharged and everything. Just snagged it while I was working. Didn’t even need stitches.” Isla had even offered to come check in on him at the motel if something like this happened again. She’d been sweet.
Ray rubbed his temple, Jonah’s words helping to put things in perspective. “Believe me, I’ll reach out once the construction is done. I’m much more sure of things with a hammer in my hand. Once I have to fully open...” He sighed, running a hand down his face.
“You knew him too. Way before I did. So much happened here and it’s too late to ask him about any of it anymore.” He said, knowing Jonah had a point but his mind so hard to reassure.
Ray nodded. “I want to believe that. It just feels like I’m waiting for another damn shoe to drop.” He had to pull out his marlboro’s. “Do you mind if I smoke?” He asked.

RAY ;
Ray looked back at her. “Bet you see a lot of injuries like these, with all the new construction happening around here, huh?” He asked, to keep his mind off of the sting of the disinfectant.
DARK BROWS RAISE IN SURPRISE and she reverts her gaze to his hand, smoothing an ointment over the wound. isla tries to be as gentle as she can, knowing the friction must have caused some discomfort. “it got you that bad, huh? i hope the stitches healed up nicely.” considering his line of work, isla thought his injuries might have been more common. she hums, nodding. “yeah, a number of 'em. maybe once or twice a week, but it’s never too bad. the worst i’ve seen is a broken bone.” after covering the wound with gauze, she begins securely wrapping it in a beige bandage. “does that feel okay, not too tight?”
“Oh yeah,” Ray said, remembering. “It was volunteer work, I didn’t really know what I was doing back then being on a construction site.” He shrugged, “Didn’t pay attention like I should have.” Ray pulled on his sweatshirt to take a look at his left arm. “It did, still a faint scare there from it.”
“We’ll that’s good to know. I just need to be more careful. I only have experience from the volunteer work and doing projects in the summer back home with my father. So now I’ll remember to wear my damn work gloves.” He said, chastising himself.
Ray nodded. “Yeah, it’s good. Thank you.” He said, flexing his hand to see if anything hurt. “That it?”

RAY ;
ISLA LOOKS UP from the book in her hands, immediately shutting it as ray approaches. “hey,” she speaks gently, sensing that something was off, “what's up?” she scoots over on the bench and pats the now empty spot next to her, inviting him to take a seat. “you know you're never a bother.” it was isla's day off and she had planned to stop by the motel to poke and prod around as he worked, so in a way, she was glad he found her.
Ray was grateful for her. She was steady and calm energy, it’s what he needed, and he sat heavily next to her. He was just quite at first, his head a rush and unsure how to share things that were that personal.
"Bad dreams.” He said, wanting to be vague because talking about seeing his late husband was still very hard.
“I’m finding it almost impossible to sleep. The stress...” He kept his gaze down. “It’s a lot.” Ray admitted.
