an almost silent, disgruntled moan sounded from the back of alice’s throat as the girl took a seat right next to her, her furrowed brow unwittingly tossing a displeased glance her way before returning to the half-finished essay. it felt like her thinking space had been invaded, as if someone had come and sat right in the place in her mind that was just about to grasp onto the next sentence. the slytherin could do nothing but groan again, rubbing her tired eyes with her free hand before turning back to the other girl. ❛ well could you maybe not talk to me over there, ❜ she sighed, gesturing vaguely to the other side of the table. ❛ you’re sitting far too close to me. ❜
victoria turned away from the slytherin and closed her eyes as if the action was a necessary step for her to fully bask in the feeling of the sun on her face --- undercut though it was by the sound of alice’s unhappiness at victoria’s choice in seating. she slowly opened her eyes, and took her time consider the other girl’s suggestion before sliding her way a bit further down; not going the indicated step of actually getting up and moving to the other side of the table, but putting a ( debatably ) more polite degree of space between the two considering that they weren’t a pair normally found in each other’s personal space. “ if I’m all the way over there then it looks like the table’s being occupied by two separate parties, fortescue, and might invite someone else to join in the empty space. if we’re intimately close, after last night’s rager --- “ victoria shrugged her shoulders before folding her legs up under her, pillowing her head under hair under her arms atop the table to give alice one last glance before shutting her eyes once more. “ we’re two friends having a gab and everyone’ll leave us alone. never mind your papers and my apparent nap. “

alice fortescue was, for once in her life, doing her homework. her head might’ve been throbbing and her eyes might’ve been drooping, but she would be damned if she let her grades drop all because of a stupid hangover. the most she could do to try and relieve the pain was scratch quill to parchment in the outside courtyard, the harsh rays of the sun keeping her awake as she flipped from the essay to the textbook and back again. she’d been hard at work for nearly half an hour before someone decided to disrupt her, hovering just above her frame and consequently blocking her light. without looking up, she sighed. ❛ you’re in my light, ❜ she mumbled, still trying desperately to get through this paragraph. ❛ i’m trying to work. ❜
victoria cocked her hip and cast a wide look around, considering, as if for the first time, alice fortescue’s immediate surrounding area. and then without any sort of invitation, she sat herself down right next to the other girl, bag set on her other side, so she was slouched low and close to the ground. she closed her eyes easily, and let them stay shut, before she opened her mouth to speak. “ guess I was, and I guess you were. now that I’m not any longer, think you’ll possibly be able to continue on your merry way with that work without needing to point out any more obvious? “ she opened one eye in a lazy, squinty wink, to look at alice. “ if I’m out here with you and you’re working, we can both be outside and left to our own devices. we don’t even need to talk to each other. “
