Actually on the subject of torn/broken plushies at the thrift, makes me very upset to see them for sale at regular thrift price when I know they’re likely not gonna get bought and will just end up in a landfill. If they weren’t so expensive (being sold by companies who got them for free mind you) I could fix them up and give them a second life. But alas, capitalism necessitates that they are either sold at a profit or destroyed.

like i said in my last anon, ive always really wanted to get into plushie making. ive always loved stuffed animals (kind of to the point where seeing them in "dangerous" situations bothers me. i'm 23 and remembering that time when i was 6 and dropped my favorite stuffed animal into a rain puddle still makes me feel sad and guilty haha)

i used to repair my stuffed animals every time my cat at the time would chew a hole in them, so i'm decent when it comes to just sewing two pieces of fabric together. i have a favorite squishmallow i've had since i was 16 and i've had to restuff and wash his fabric multiple times over the years, i kind of view it like surgery lol. i had a sewing machine that i wanted to learn how to use but it kept getting jammed and after some googling i learned that the specific brand and model i was trying to use was notorious for jams, so i gave up on that end. anyways sorry for the rambling, i'm the anon who sent all the questions a few days ago and i appreciate all your responses, they're super helpful for when i decide to start trying to make plushies again!

It’s awesome that you put so much care into repairing your stuffies! I do too, it makes me sad to see torn/ripped/broken plushies at thrift stores when I know I could fix them up. I pretty much gave up on my sewing machine too, someday I’ll pick it back up (or so I keep telling myself). Nothing wrong with hand sewing a plushie, just remember to take breaks! It’s very hard on your hands.

ironically enough, bringing a plushie to a public setting as an adult requires a tremendous level of emotional development, and attempting to shame an adult for having a plushie in public requires a significant amount of immaturity. this applies to a surprising number of things.

how did you get started plushie making and what kind did you make/what sort of pattern? ive always really wanted to get into it but i find it super hard to find where to start. do you use a sewing machine ? what kind of fluff? sorry if this is too many questions!! feel free to ignore or only answer a few

Hi, always happy to answer questions :3

I don’t use a sewing machine everything is hand sewn, I bought one at thrift store but haven’t figured out how to fix it yet.

I use Poly-Fil Ultra Plush Fiber Fill from Walmart most of the time, I tend to take stuffing out of my plushies to make em floppier and repurpose it. I don’t know what the plastic beads I use are bc I thrifted them sorry! They’re just plastic poly pellets. I used to use rice in my first plushies but I wouldn’t recommend it.

I started making plushies as a kid but I got really frustrated with it and threw out anything I made back then </3 but I picked it back up as a teen when I saw Kasey Golden’s felt cactus tutorial I thought “hey that looks doable!” And it was :) it’s a good place to start if you’re new or rusty with sewing. Making animals was what I really wanted though, so I modified the shapes to make a squid from there, and thus my first pattern was born:

My first plushies were all made with those $1 felt squares you can get in most craft sections, felt is super easy to work with I recommend it as a good starting place! I made tons of plushies, more squid, octopus, fish, possums, made up animals. I made a sphinx one time. I would just bring all my supplies to school in a little baggie and sew during class, between classes, in restaurants, everywhere haha.

I made a lot of these beanie baby inspired guys ^ they’re pretty easy to make bc the top pattern and bottom pattern are just top and bottom view of the animal. Sew together, add a tail, eyes and ears and you’ve got a critter! I can make a pattern for this kinda thing if that’s something ppl would be interested in.

I kinda took a long break from sewing and it wasn’t until the last few years actually that I moved into fleece very briefly (left) and now work almost entirely with fur (right) for plush making.
