Can Meditation Help You Lose Weight?
Weâve all been there: weâre feeling nervous, or anxious, maybe even a bit aggravated. Maybe weâre stuck in traffic, are having a bad day at the office, or having relationship issues. So we automatically reach for the Ben & Jerryâs or a bag of Skittles.
We eat for many reasons that often have nothing to do with actual hunger. We eat when weâre stressed or upset, when our clock tells us itâs âmealtimeâ, when weâre in certain social situations, or even just out of boredom. Sometimes, we start eating out of hunger but just keep going past the point of being full. We also tend to eat too fast, which doesnât give us time to listen to our bodyâs cues, telling us when weâve had enough. This type of mindless, emotional eating leads to weight gain as we take in much more than our body needs and can burn off.
Basically, it boils down to this: Meditation can help us lose weight in a couple of ways.
First of all, meditation can make us more aware of, and even reduce, negative emotions, which cause much of our over-eating to begin with. It actually helps us to combat stress and become more aware of our thoughts, feelings and emotions, moment to moment. When weâre stressed, our body releases stress hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol. Cortisol actually stimulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism for fast energy and it may actually increase appetite. Meditation can be an antidote. While you meditate you release hormones like oxytocin, the âloveâ hormone and serotonin the âfeel goodâ hormone.
Secondly, meditation makes us more mindful and attentive to whatever weâre doing, including eating. Â We become more aware of our eating habits. We eat a bit slower, and we enjoy what weâre eating. Rather than mindlessly working our way through that bag of potato chips, we become more conscious of the impulses that drive us to eat and overeat. So rather than just being tossed around by our emotions, we become the captain of our own ship.
To listen to our guided meditation for weight loss, just click the video below. No experience is needed â itâs just 15 minutes sitting in a chair!

Healthy Breakfast
Studies have found that those who skip breakfast and eat fewer times a day tend to be heavier than people who have a healthy breakfast and eat 4 or 5 times a day.
Scientists also believe that a high-protein breakfast could be the key to slimming as it keeps you feeling full, and thus improves appetite control. Plus, it has been found to reduce evening snacking on high-sugar and high-fat foods.
Try some protein-rich breakfast recipes, such as:
a high-protein smoothie
boiled eggs
cottage cheese and fruits
Greek yogurt
fortified cereal with milk
You can also eat fiber-rich foods like oatmeal and sandwiches on whole-grain bread. Plus, replace your morning cup of coffee with green tea as it contains powerful antioxidants and promotes fat burning.
Another very important aspect is to prepare your food at home using organic and whole food ingredients. If you are not used to eating a proper breakfast, it may take you a few days to adjust to this habit.

Is Avocado Bad on a Diet?
The high fat content of avocados might make you think about forgoing them completely on a diet. Compared to most other fruits, it is true that avocado has a higher fat and calorie content, but this doesn't make it a bad choice on your diet.
The Energy Equation
Energy in versus energy out is the most important factor in any diet. If you want to lose weight, you'll need to be burning more calories than you consume on a daily basis. A 1-ounce serving of avocado -- about one-fifth of a medium-sized fruit -- contains 50 calories. To work out how to fit avocado into your diet, you need to work out how many calories you should be consuming. Do this by multiplying your body weight in pounds by 12 to 13, advises nutritionist Ben Greenfield.
Fight the Fat
The 4.5 grams of fat in a serving of avocado could potentially out you off, especially considering most other fruits and vegetables are virtually fat-free. Don't be so hasty, though -- this fat could be helpful in your diet. The fat in avocados is predominantly monounsaturated -- the kind that's good for your heart. Unsaturated fat also contains oleic acid, which makes your brain think you're full, thus quelling those cravings later in the day.
