Catching
Along with throwing, catching is one of the two most important skills in Ultimate Frisbee. Make sure to always keep your eyes on the disc until you have possession.
- On handed rim catch: One-hand should only be used when you cannot get two hands on the disc. Examples include very high throws, very low throws, and throws behind you.
- Two handed rim catch: For throws below the waist and above the chin. With throws above the chin, the thumbs should be pointed down. For throws below the waist, the thumbs should be pointed up.
- Pancake: The pancake is the most “sure” catch and should be used whenever possible. It is best used for throws waist and chin level. Try to get your body in front of the disc. If you can jump or slide to pancake the disc, it is preferable to catching it by the rim
The cutting
Cutting is an essential Ultimate Frisbee skill. If you can create separation between you and your defender, you are much more likely to get the disc. Cutting is what will give you that separation. The most essential element of a cut is a sharp change in direction. There are different ways to set up your defender on a cut. The two most common ways are:
1. Drive at your defender to get them off balance and then cut to your desired location.
2. Drive away from your defender. Once they commit to following you, cut underneath or behind them.
Tips for cutting:
-“Sell” your cut – make your cut look like a real option.
- Don’t “round” your cuts – make sure your cuts are sharp.
- Cut on your outside foot – if your cut is to the right, cut off of your left foot. This will make your cut faster.

Improved throws
After my teaching about Backhand,Forehand throws lets analyze some improved throws. Between the straight drafts, you can also throw some curves to hide your opponents. There are two diffrent ways more to throw the disc, the outside-in and the inside-out. Lets declare it a little bit:
Inside-out throws (green paths),
occur when the thrower releases the disc in such a way that it initially come towards the throwing axis(inside) However, the disc is tilted with the side closest to the body highest, which causes the disc to curve away from the thrower(-out).
Outside-in throws (blue paths, sometimes also called a bender),
follow the opposite path. The thrower releases the disc moving away from throwing axis (outside-), but with the side of the disc closest to the body lowest. This tilt causes the disc to bend back towards the thrower(-in).
Just try it with your backhand and your forehand aswell.

At this "new kind of sport", everyone are starting at the same level.
2. Child`s play

Because of the physical attributes, the disc can fly very amazing. It`s fascinating for all age groups.
4.Throw
After only a few training sessions, you get a sense of achivement.
5.Gender is not important
Between the speed and stamina, above all you need a good technique in throwing and catching. Therefore you can play with boys and girls.
6. Non-contact
Ultimate is a non-contact sport. Actually is every contact a foul. Because of this, injuries are decreasing.
7.Fair Play
The most important rule is the "Spirit of the Game". Each player is comitted to be respectful and fair. In this way, you can play without referees.
8. Playing field
You only need at least 10 member to play a match. For example, football needs 22 player.
9. Trend sport
This game is already very popular in USA. Meanwhile in this country there are more than 5 million active player. This kind of sport is a mix between American Football and Basketball, so it has all good elements for a popular sport.
10. No Limits
Besides the usual training sessions, you can join tournaments, championships and leagues.
The Stack - The first strategy of gameplay
If you are playing Ultimate without strategies, each player will run across the field confused. The stack is the easiest way to get a good structure in your offense. If the reciever wants to pass the disc, he will need enough space for his throw. So lets try to explain the easiest kind of the stack, the 1-6 stack.
As its name implies, each player without the disc, stack in front of the reciever with at least 10 meters distance. Now, the pitcher has enough space to the left or right side. The sequences of this strategies are very easy to understand. The first player(number 2) has to give the first offer. To reach the best offers, the player have to do cuts in their sprints to the left or right side. If the offer is not safe, the second player starts the next offer (number 3) and the first one has to go back at the end of the queue. This process has to be repeat until you are in front of the endzone.
If you understand this strategy, it's easy to explain some other variations of the stack. For example, the 4-3 stack
This kind of the stack is much safer than the 1-6 variation because they can pass back and forth. 4 players are the "defense" and the others are the stack. They give some offers like in the previous example. In concerning to the few offense player, its starting to be a circle. For this strategy, you need a lot of stamina if you are playing in the "offense".
Playing without referees
Ultimate is a non-contact sport and it's based totally on fair play. The first and most important rule is the "Spirit of the Game". This is the reason why no referees will be used
The spirit of the game stands for Fair Play and Fun. Each player is committed to don't break the rules and to be respectful. On championships and tournaments, between the championship victory there is also the "Spirit of the Game" award for the fairest team. To get the sport playable, there are some easy rules and calls they have to follow.
Possible calls of the pitcher
Fast Count: The defending team has to count the pitcher until 10 sec. If he is counting to fast, the pitcher can call his foul
Foul: When the pitcher is hitted by the opposite team
Strip: During play, the receiver of the disc has caught it already when a player of the opposite team mangages to strike the disc down, the disc goes back to the reciever
Double Team: Only one player may defend the reciever. If any player comes to close to the reciever, they get a foul.
Possible calls of the catcher
Foul and Strip
The Overhead Throw
Now we are talking about the Hammer Throw. I hope you read my entries before, just to understand the techniques like the forehand or the backhand throw.
First of all, let`s talk about the grip again. The grip is actually the same as at the forehand. Two fingers are pressed inside and the thump is still on the top. So it`s very important to have a big pressure on the disc, to get this throw very far.
After the declaration about the grip, we have to speak about the motion. The motion of the hammer throw is familiar with the American Football or the Baseball throw. The only different movement is, that you are finish on the top over the head. Just fold back your wrist and do a quickly snap at the end of this motion.
This throw is pretty nice to get a fast long distance. In personal this is my favorite throw to get the disc in the end zone. Just try it for yourself!
The Forehand Throw
The easiest way to get good grip at the forehand, is to just make a gun with your hand. Your two closen fingers are pressed on the frame from the inside of the disc and additional your thump are on the top.
To throw the forehand perfect, it´s very important to understand how to acting right. If you are struggling with the rotation or your disc is wobbling a bit, try to snap more. A good example is, when you are trying to hit someone with the towel, you do a quickly snap at the end of the movement and this is a kind of same thing like the forehand.
Many people are trying to use their arm to get more distance, but it's really comes out from the wrist. If your disc is always turning over, you have to watch at the end. Your arm and your hand have to be facing up and straight, so you can guarantee that your disc is flying no curves. If your are understand the whole act about the quickly snap, you will learn the forehand throw very fast.
If you master the backhand and the forehand throw, Ultimate Frisbee is starting to be very exiting. You can almost throw in all positions and the game is starting to be creative.
The Backhand Throw
Everybody knows the backhand. This throw we all learned in our sport lessons at the school. It's the first step and technique you have to learn about Ultimate Frisbee.
First of all we have to talk about, how to keep the disc right. It's very important that you have a good grip. Some people just holding the disc only with their fingers.....please, don't do this. Use your whole hand!( look at picture 3)
The key for all throws are very simple: spin and rotation. To reach the most effective rotation, you have to snap your disc at the right moment and move with your whole upper body and waist.
The best way to master all techniques and to throw a perfect backhand is practice. Just pick a friend and throw whenever you can because the more often you do it, the better you will get.
