♛ → THE TRUE NORTH presents VILDE HARCLAY OF MOON CIRCLE, DAUGHTER OF THE HARCLAY. when the dragons danced in the sky they DIDN’T CARE WHO would still fly, but in the blink of an eye, they would all die. the TWENTY-NINE year old FEMALE who was PERSEVERING & CLEVER before they saw the first of the flames, is now RASH & ATONING after seeing the last. they’re often associated with the ancient rituals to cleanse the dead, the constant absence of a twin image long gone, and the haunted eyes of a woman with silence on her lips and screaming in her head ( FC: Imogen Poots)
BACKGROUND:
Vilde was born mere minutes after her twin brother, Olav, was delivered. They were the first children born to The Harclay (the chieftain) of that eponymous Northern clan. The horrors of the birth of the twins were quickly revealed, amongst the copious amounts of blood lost by the mother: Vilde born a healthy babe, and Olav was born stiff, frail, and barely breathing. (tw: death, including infant death ) Olav did not last a day before he took his last breath in his mother’s arms, who also turned cold and lifeless before the sun rose the next day. In one fell swoop, The Harclay lost his lady and his heir, left with only a daughter. (Some years later, Vilde’s father would remarry and have two more children, including his long-awaited male heir).
Thus, since infancy, Vilde had a very close association with death. Not only death as an abstract idea, but as the cause of it. Her father never let her accept another truth other than that he would have preferred to have Olav live instead of her. He never let her forget that she had eaten away in the womb what her brother ought to have gotten. Since before she could even properly walk she had begun to understand just how unwanted she was and how much blame she was to carry for the rest of her life.
Unfortunate and wretched as she was, the chieftain did raise her to become a proper clanswoman. He would not have his daughter shame him by not being a proper Harclay, after all. Vilde learned what Northern ladies ought to know, even if her kind did not fully adopt the terms and titles of Westerosi nobility. The Harclays were a noble house, but their nobility came from their strength and the ancient practices of the mountains, not the gilded notions of Southron folk.
Her initial fault, the very sin she carried since her birth, was not fully useless either. That macabre aura of death that had clung to Vilde since she entered the world was meant to be reframed as her purpose: to become a sálþyrja (soul cleanser/sin-eater).
When a person dies, the Harclays (and other clans) have the ancient practice of cleansing the bodies before laying them to rest. The sálþyrja is the woman in charge of washing the body and dressing the person in their finer clothes. She then conducts the rúnarit ritual (rune writing), carving a couple of objects belonging to the person with protective or guiding runes. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the sálþyrja has a simple, ritual meal in order to spiritually take away the sins of the deceased person. All of this the sálþyrja does alone, and when she is finished, she let the families come and claim their loved one, who has been cleansed and can be properly buried or cremated. This practice began in her clan centuries ago, has continued in other clans, and even a few Northern families have requested a sálþyrja’s services in the past.
A sálþyrja is thus commonly known as a sin-eater or a soul cleanser in the common tongue, and as a consequence of their work, a sálþyrja is believed to carry the sins of those they have cleansed. In the Harclay clan, Vilde is both feared, respected and sometimes even shunned because of this.
CLAN HARCLAY:
Their home is Moon Circle in the Northern Mountains west of Last Hearth.
They’re considered a noble family, but they don’t use the title lord or lady. Instead, the only titled individual is the chieftain, who is only known as The Harclay.
They consider themselves to be above wildlings, but for other Northerners (and other Westerosi too), they're often seen as more savage than "civilized" folk.
They did fight in the Dance of the Dragons, following the Starks. Men and women alike fought in the war. Vilde herself was one of the archers in some of the battles, though her presence in the war camps was mostly to cleanse the dead.
The clan has resented some of Owen’s actions in recent years.
They did not fight in the war against the Umbers, remaining neutral. With the divide in the North, the Harclays stand as part of the True North faction.
