I think part of getting better is complete ego death. Like you’re not above setting a timer for 5 minutes and focusing on a task. You’re not above doing a very simple 3 minute workout to start. You’re not above reading for 10 minutes a day when you first get out of your reading slump, even if you used to read for hours. You’re not above starting slow and then building up to where you want to be/where you once were. What you are above is total inertia. Doing something really is better than doing nothing. Radically accept where you are, radically accept your limits, and go from there. Don’t let your ego get in the way.

antiracism is a constant process. i was raised in a racist village and it's not easy to get rid of it. i moved away over 10 years ago but those ideas are still haunting me.

also keep in mind that shame + guilt are not conducive to growing as a person. when it comes to "checking yourself" it should be a non-judgemental process. it's not about flagellating yourself for every bad thought or trying to purify your mind of all corruption. it's only when acknowledging your own racist thoughts doesn't fill you with dread that you can really progress past the white guilt of it all.

radical self-acceptance & genuine self-critique are not opposites. they need each other. do not let obsessive-compulsive behaviors colonize your desire to grow as a person.

The idea of moral purity is fundamentally incompatible with antiracism.

Moral purity is a myth that does not survive contact with the real world.

Having an all purpose, universal set of perfect and unproblematic things to say, words to use etc is actually functionally impossible. The words that one person from a marginalised group tells you are polite and respectful may sound horribly insensitive to a different person from that group.

The varied responses to the first question in this video illustrate it pretty well:

Which is NOT to say you shouldn't bother with trying to be respectful, and it's NOT that you should avoid interactions for fear of making a mistake.

It's just that you need to start thinking of your mistakes, and other people correcting them, as learning opportunities rather than moral transgressions. Learn to say "sorry" and "thank you" and mean it.

Telling someone, "But... but somebody else said that I should say..." is generally unhelpful. It reads as defensive and resistant to learning.

Never mind whether you're following The Universal Unwritten Rules of Being Morally Pure and Unproblematic, because those don't exist.

Are you being respectful to the individual person you are speaking to? What does that person view as respectful?

i really thought the point of "being lgbt+ doesn't absolve you of racism as a white person" was that white people arent absolved of racism by being marginalized but it really seems like people think other marginalizations make it okay. no being disabled doesn't do it. no being poor doesnt do it. we need to fight against racism actively no matter what.
