will truly never never never understand people refusing to engage with media that they can't relate to. like the fact so many people will refuse to watch a "foreign" movie because of cultural differences. aside ignorance and racism and any kind of bigotry for a second, it literally does not make sense from a logical point. you get to learn something new and you get to see how universal certain experiences and feelings are. if i watch a movie made by someone from the other side of the world i think oh look how they do this and this, where i live we have a different approach or i go omg we do the same thing here, cultural similarities yay! and then when it comes to that intrapersonal aspect i'll see this and that character be profoundly lonely or failing their studies or whatever and think yeah i feel seen. like the worst thing that can happen is you won't like a movie and that's it, but to go through life consuming media and art in such a shallow way is such a waste. i know people want to be seen and heard, but you need to step out of yourself for a second. don't be so self-centered.
