Patsy Kelly (Bridget Sarah Veronica Rose Kelly: January 12, 1910 - September 24, 1981) was openly lesbian for majority of her career, having come out in the 1930s by publicly disclosing herself as a “dyke.” She was a personal assistant to Tallulah Bankhead with whom she had an affair with while working with her. She lived with fellow actress Wilma Cox for several years before splitting up when Cox moved to New York. She appeared in 35 shorts with Thelma Todd as Todd’s “brash, wisecracking sidekick.” After Thelma Todd’s tragic, suspicious passing from carbon monoxide poisoning in 1935, she was replaced by Lyda Roberti who unfortunately passed away in 1938 due to heart failure. After her film career declining in 1943, Kelly did not make another picture for 17 years. During her later career she appeared in television programs such as The Dick Van Dyke Show and Alfred Hitchcock Presents as well as having a role in Rosemary’s Baby (1968), directed by Roman Polanski and Freaky Friday (1976) along with Jodie Foster. She starred in several Broadway musicals throughout the 1970s, including Irene with Debbie Reynolds. Patsy Kelly passed away September 24, 1981 of cancer in Los Angeles, California.
