he must be way drunker than he thinks, saying this kind of stuff to someone he barely knows. joe’s eyes sting with the threat of tears but he’s shown enough weakness. why does he keep doing this ? letting people in, showing off his scars, getting too close for comfort. eventually someone always ends up hurt. and joe macmillan is far too familiar with hurt. he’s heard the same thing from his actual therapist, that he wants to be in control, and truth is, he needs to be in control. to feel that slipping makes him desperate to grab onto any semblance of it, to get the leash tied around his wrist rather than his neck. the leash, the noose, however you want to put it.
charley’s hands on his own, that skin to skin contact, is electrifying as it is terrifying. he won’t do this again, he’s promised himself, he’s not going through that again. but for a moment, it feels nice, her skin is warm, and she’s comforting to touch. to hell with it, he’ll indulge for just one night. if he says yes to the dancing, if he downs his drink, it’s all his choice, it’s all under his control. it doesn’t have to be scary if he knows what he’s doing.
