“Quiet seems good right about now. Why did I think studying in the common room was a good idea.” Vitani grabbed her bag. “You coming with?” she asked.
“I can never study with so much people around, I feel like even if I try to concentrate, I can’t truly do it because the buzz is still clogging my brain.” She confessed, taking a second to consider her question before scrambling to stack her books. “Sure!”
Violet felt some of the everyday tension ease off her shoulders as she walked into the college library. The smell of books and wood filled her nose and she walked towards the familiar blonde with a slight smile on her face. “Hi, Elyon!” She greeted her in a soft voice. “I wanted to meet up with you to ask if you’ll be joining next year’s book club. I’ve been thinking about it for a while...”
“Yeah,” he agreed, watching her reach for the box. “Maybe it’s karma.” He bit his lip, mentally kicking himself for being a dick about it. “You’ll be okay. The flu is only deadly if you’re old. And last time I checked, you aren’t.” Drew sat cross legged against the foot of the couch. He let his head fall back next to her, picking out spots on her ceiling to stare to distract himself from the uncomfortable feeling he got watching her suffer. “I’ve had the flu shot this year. I’m not too worried about it,” he told the ceiling. Drew turned to face her, fighting the urge to move the stray hair from her face. “I’d rather be here with you.”
“Well if it’s Karma I’m gonna have to make some deep reflecting to make sure this doesn’t happy again.” Violet murmured, pulling the blanket closer to her. She couldn’t help but chuckle. “Thank you, that’s the best thing I’ve heard today.” Her eyes fluttered, she felt like she might fall asleep at any minute, but she also wanted to talk to Drew. “Wow next time take me with you, I always forget about those and regret it later. Case in point.” She replied. Her eyes traveled from the ceiling and down to his face, suddenly realizing how close they actually were. “Well as long as you want to stay, I’m happy to be with you.”
He stared at Violet as if she’d grown another head. “Today isn’t Thursday?” Atticus asked softly and rubbed at his eyes, finally focusing on all that Violet had said and feeling the worry set over his mind. “Drink this now, please.” He placed his own glass of water in front of her. “You shouldn’t drink that, it’s poison.” Atty replied solemnly… forgetting for a moment that he still had a new pack of cigarettes tucked away in his briefcase. “What was the book about? And the paper, for that matter.” After asking for another glass and two coffees, he sighed. “Every year I think I’m close to finishing, they add another seven steps to get Certified.”
“What?” She asked, her eyes widening. “It’s Wednesday isn’t it?” Violet could feel herself starting to freak out. “Please tell me it’s wedenseday because otherwise I stayed up all night writing that freaking paper for nothing because I had another day to do it...” Her eyes went to the glass and she smirked at him. “Is it? Considering how fashionable Adderall and Ritalin arw with wayward students now I would’ve thought you’d encourage Red Bull.” She joked, drinking the whole glass in two big gulps. “Oh it was a YA but a pretty good one at that. It’s called Six of Crows.” She rolled her eyes. “A paper in Victorian literature and it’s influence on post modern writers.” The brunette quirked an eyebrow. “Oh. What did they add now?”
Drew noticed his gritted teeth and quickly relaxed his jaw as a fake smile plastered over his lips. He held the tips of her fingers in his palm, sort-of examining them as he listened. “No,” he said, locking eyes with her, “I’m just a former addict who’s the son of adicts, so I know a withdrawal when I see one.” He didn’t mean to sound so blunt. He was extremely proud of her for trying to quit. But even the thought of her getting started in the first place brought up strange feelings that were easier to put away when he didn’t beat around the bush. “Sounds like you also have the flu, though.” Drew pushed himself from the bed to search through her medicine drawer. He grabbed what he was looking for, and a couple other bottles he thought might be useful. ‘If we can get your fever down, you might be able to sleep the rest of your symptoms off.” Drew handed her two pills and a bottle of water. “I can stay here, if you want,” he offered, his voice softer than before, “I don’t have anywhere to be.”
Violet tensed for a moment, hearing it caught her off guard. She dragged in a slow breath, thinking that telling her this had probably been hard for Drew. “Oh...” Nothing else came to mind, but after a moment she added. “Well, at least it’s leaving my body, I guess.” She moved her hand to grab a Kleenex from one of the boxes she’d placed all around her apartment and blow her nose. “Just my luck, I got sick at the exact same time.” She rested against her pillow as she saw him stand. “Yeah, it certainly feels like the flu.” A small smile grazed her lips. “Hey, but thanks. For sticking by me even when I’m sick and gross.” She held her hand up and took the pills, taking each with a long gulp of water. “Sure. I have some antibacterial foam if you want some. And we can watch some old movie. If that’s really okay with you.” She closes her eyes. “I also understand if you need to go, though.”

Violet felt lie there was electricity coursing through her veins as her eyes focused on her friend. “I drank to red bulls before dawn to stay up.” She explained. “Wasted half the night reading, I couldn’t help but finish my book and by that time it was 4 am and I still had a paper to write.” She explained. “How was your Thursday night?”
Angel knew she hadn’t really been away from Costa Serena all that long, but after being suspended, her adoptive parents made her leave the island and move back home until the semester was over. She had to admit that she missed the fast-paced city life in New York, but all her friends were here, so no one could blame her for being happy to be back. As she walked through town, she spotted a familiar face and turned to talk as they passed her. “Hey, I’ve only been gone for a few weeks, ya ain’t even goin’ to say hello?”
Violet turned to the other girl, her eyebrows going up. She always got nervous when someone approached her in public places, getting an urge to turn invisible but resisting it most of the time. She finally placed Angel, she had shared some classes with her. “Oh, hello! Sorry, I didn’t see you.” She explained with an apologetic smile.
Drew knew something was up when she hadn’t texted him since the day before. There wasn’t a day that had gone by since they started hanging out that they didn’t at least send a message to say hi, so for her to not even bother to answer the tens of texts he’d sent was worrisome. He wiggled the door open, brow furrowed as he searched for her. As he heard her muffled moan, he leaned over the couch, surprised to see the girl curled up on the hardwood floor. “What are you doing?” Drew hurried over to her, kneeling to get a better look. He reached for her hand, but jumped back in shock at the heat radiating off of her. “Are you sick?” he asked, even though he knew the answer. Drew scooped Violet into his arms, his back hitting the couch as he pulled her onto his lap, fingers gently combing through her tangled hair. “Christ, you’re a mess,” he tried to joke, but his unease made the statement shaky.
Violet’s eyes moved up to follow the figure, the vibration of the steps felt familiar even if she couldn’t see his face yet, and she knew it was Drew. She felt relief wash over her, at least she wasn’t alone now, even if she didn’t like to admit it much, she hated being on her own when she was sick. She remembered her mom sitting by her bedside as a kid and how she’d ask her to stay there until she felt better. “Looking for my phone but then I just didn’t want to get up.” She mumbled. “No, no I just like to get my temperature up from time to time, test that immune system.” She joked half-heartedly. She smiled, letting him carry her and trying to stay still to make it easier for him. “Thank you, I always take your compliments to heart.” She replied, her voice raspy. “I don’t even know what’s going on, i probably have the flu.” The brunette admitted. “Also my hands won’t stop shaking, which is quite annoying.” She closed her eyes as she felt his fingers on her hair. “Please don’t leave me alone.”
Violet had to make an effort to keep her eyes open for more than five seconds. They itched, and her lids were heavy. Her nose was stuffer and her throat sore. But she could have dealt with any of that, what she couldn’t deal with was the added pressure of her nicotine withdrawal and the freaking fever that would not go down. She heard her door open but could not muster the courage to get up, hopefully it was Drew and not an ax murdered. Only Drew had a key to her place. “Mmhff.” She murmured sadly.
Atta let a small smile flash over her face for a moment before she relapsed into her usual stoic self. “Thank you,” she nodded, “Um… you could take these addressed ones to the post office, but I was thinking you’d want to stay and campaign a little? We have that parks measure that we really want to pass. Maybe you could chat up a few passerbys.”
Violet smiled, trying to push back her nerves. Campaigning sounded good, she needed the experience if she ever wanted to lead campaigns on her own. Even if just thinking about it gave her social anxiety. “Sure. Yeah.” She replied, grabbing some of the fliers. “Uh...” She wasn’t sure if she should ask but she did anyway to calm her nerves. “Any tips or pointers? On what to talk about, and such. I’m not always the best at striking up conversations, but I really wanna help with this.”
Atta straightened a sign marked Register Here before looking over her shoulder to see someone admiring it from behind. “Have you registered? The primary is on the 17th, that’s only 13 days away.”
Violet carefully stepped around the person Atta was talking to, she was good at being discreet, it came with her personality. Once she was behind the counter she let the heavy box down and waited to talk to Atta. “Hi. I brought the rest of the pamphlets.” She explained. “Is there anything else that needs to be done?”
“You look like you are about to get sick so I am going to give you a chance to reconsider your answer.” Despite the door being unlocked for her already, Shenzi did not make a move. Instead, she waited for the brunette to speak again. “I can change that if you would give me a more sure yes.” She laughed as she shook her head. “No, I can handle it.”
“I’m not going to get sick, this is just a weird situation that also brings me some weird memories.” Violet murmured, gesturing for the girl to get in. She clasped her hands on the steering wheel and took a deep fire breath to get ahold of herself and keep composure. “You can handle it?” She eased back on the road and floored the accelerator once she was in place, slowly releasing the pedal as they got away from the creepy spot. “Some of that looks like it needs to be disinfected... Do you want any help?” She’d helped her parents and even her brother clean up more than once, she’d even done it for herself sometimes. Training could be hard on everyone and her parents weren’t just training anymore.
“Two time’s the charm!” He laughed softly as his fingers seamlessly adjusted to the chords; a bit embarrassed he had no clue what the first song was, he’d look it up later. “We passed upon the stair, we spoke of was and when. Although I wasn’t there, he said I was his friend.” Matt sang the whole thing with a little smile on his face, looking at Violet once it was done. “Dude was the best of us.”
“Uh. Yeah. Sorry. I don’t even know how I found the other one in the first place.” She mumbled, quietly moving to rest her back against a store pillar and listen to the song. She nodded, moving back to stand straight. “Yeah. Too bad he left so soon.”
“Show off.” Atty’s words were thinly veiled under a half-assed cough; he smiled back. “Not really. It’s actually possible to even play Solitaire with that deck.” He hummed in thought for a few seconds, nodding along to the idea. “Alright, you can go first. I’m most likely to lose again, anyway.”
“Hmm... you’re very good at muttering under your breath though, too bad there isn’t a game for that.” She teased. “You can’t lose at two person charades, well just get to make fun of each other and call it a game.” She grinned. “Alright... okay, I got it.” She started featuring wildly, for once not worried about what others would think.
