Hey, how are you these days? Are you still a teacher?

Hey, thanks for asking! :) While I still work in education, I’m not presently teaching in a classroom. That might have actually been a stroke of luck, because I know pretty much every American teacher has had a horrible time trying to teach online since the pandemic began. Schools reopened last week at half capacity, and (predictably) teachers have begun getting sick. It’s all an awful mess, some teachers have actually quit or retired early, because they’re being forced to chance getting seriously ill/potentially dying just to keep their career. I was an elementary school teacher......I can’t imagine the nightmare of trying to teach half my class online, while trying to keep the other half of germy kids properly socially distanced. Back when I was teaching I couldn’t get enough goddang textbooks for my class, so I have zero faith in the school system’s ability to follow health protocol. The school I used to work at has already suffered a Covid outbreak and has closed indefinitely. This will all end in another mass shutdown, and perhaps a good number of teachers dead, and more debilitated for life. Not a good time to be a teacher!

I work in a college testing lab. I proctor exams to students. Or at least that’s what I did, pre-Covid. Now students are slooooowly trickling back in. It’s a nice little return to normality, though the health risks remain. I wear a mask, gloves, and face shield, and we must disinfect all surfaces in the lab constantly. Still, can’t complain! :) At least I have a job still. There are no major worries or stress sources in my life presently (besides Covid, but what can you do). I feel content most days, I’m getting enough sleep, my diet has greatly improved since my quarantine binge-eating days, and I am losing weight again. Also I have a cute doggie~

I do hope to return to teaching by next fall. At the moment I’m studying English. I’m aiming to get certified to teach English Language Skills to adult students looking to get their GEDs. :)

This is Jonathan the Great Tortoise.

He lives at the Governor’s mansion on St. Helena island in the South Atlantic. (The final resting place of Napoleon Bonaparte.) He spends his days hanging out on a perfectly manicured lawn with his best friend Fred and his mate Emma.

Here is a pic of him (left) as a young whippersnapper in 1886.

Jonathan might not look a day over 129, but he is not completely immune to the aging process. He has lost most of his vision due to cataracts. His hearing is still pretty good and he really enjoys listening to people playing tennis.

Despite his advanced age Jonathan is still a sex machine. His handlers say his libido is quite strong to this day. Here he is posting thirst trap to Instagram.

After he uses his powers of seduction he’ll get busy with Emma.

Okay, I have to admit the Randonautica app is pretty fun.

Just in case you’ve never heard about it, it’s an app where you’re supposed to think of something intensely and then the app will give you random coordinates which you can look up on google maps, and when you get there you should find something that relates to what you thought of.

A big part of it is just to break out of your routine and try going new places and I’m always down for a bike trip to nowhere so I had to try it.

My first thought was “tiger”. The map took me down a nice residential area and into the backyard of an empty house (as in, no one was living there). No tigers.

I still had fun though so my next thought was “pink hair”. This time I was lead to a small private parking lot for businesses with lots of P’s everywhere and a hairdresser next to it. Pink Hair. P. Hairdresser. Does that count?

No matter, this time I thought “work” and to my glee the app gave me the coordinates for a private house right across from my workplace! That was really fun.

So if you like going for trips in cars or on bikes, I can highly recommend it. I’ll definitely be using it some more during the weekend.

Several times now I’ve seen Americans use Danish police as an example of what to emulate, so I thought I’d show a clip of how Danish police responds when faced with an aggressive person. This isn’t meant to praise or condemn Danish police, just show what happens and explain what’s going on.

This is the very latest case of Danish police using their guns. It happens pretty rarely so it always ends up on the news, especially this time because it happened during the protests against police violence in America, though this was unrelated. It happened during an anti-Muslim demonstration.

The man is holding up a knife. The police repeatedly yells at him to drop the weapon and get on the ground. The man keeps the knife raised. One of the officers fires a warning shot up into the air. They are required by law to do this to tell the person that they’re being serious and that the next shot will be directed at them, and also to let the other officers know what their intentions are. In the background you can see other officers starting to push people back. This is to protect them so they won’t get hit if the officer choose to shoot at the person. The man is yelling “Why is he shooting me?!” and someone in the crowd yells “He’s sick! I know him! He won’t hurt you! He’s just sick!”. The police repeatedly tells him to drop the weapon and the man responds with “No!” Finally the officer decides that the spectators are out of harms way and shoot the man in the leg. An officer runs over and steps on the arm holding the knife and keeps his foot there until the knife has been removed. He and another officer then roll him over and handcuff him, calling for the medics as they’re doing so to come and help the man. We know he was immediately hospitalized and survived.

The Danish police education is 2 years and 4 months. Everything they did was by the book and within the laws for Danish police. The law states that they’re only allowed to use force relative to the situation, so it’s okay to shoot a man with a knife with a handgun but not, say, an automated weapon or worse. Danish police are not given tasers because they can be accidentally lethal if the person has a heart condition. They warned him by shooting into the air (though the shot should have been directed even more upward to be less dangerous), they aimed for a non-lethal part of the body, didn’t shoot before they were sure not to hit bystanders, and made sure to get medical help for the man as soon as he was unarmed and handcuffed.

The big question is, did they have to shoot him in the leg? Could he have been talked down? Or was it safer for everyone to end it quickly?

It has sparked a lot of debate in Denmark, but here you have it; the Danish police doing exactly what their training has taught them.

Honestly? I’m so excited for the new Wolfman movie with Ryan Gosling. I love werewolf movies too much not to be and I’ve developed an appreciation for Ryan Gosling.

It’ll be about a news anchor (Gosling) who turns into a werewolf at night and reports on the murders during the day.

I love all the bemused “But why would Gosling do this? He can be in anything he wants. This makes no sense” because apparently it was him who pitched the idea. He’s even doing it for a much smaller paycheck than usual because he wants to do this monster movie.

Don’t question the Gosling I suppose. I’m just really happy to get a new werewolf movie.

Oh sheeeeet! There’s going to be no less than two werewolf movies written by women in the near future!

There’s Ryan Gosling’s Wolfman which will be written by “Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who wrote for Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” who penned the script based on an original pitch by Gosling” about an anchor man who has to report on his own murders (Gosling fans have informed me that this is such a big passion project for him because he’s a huge werewolf fan. He even has a little werewolf hand tattoo)

The other project is a werewolf western about white settlers encountering native werewolves by the sound of it that was pitched by Guillermo del Toro and written by Issa López (The two of them should probably brace themselves for all the Twilight jokes)

Sounds like it’ll be a great time for werewolf fans!

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why the vampires in the What We Do In The Shadows movie appears to be straight (with maybe the exception of Deacon who asks for both a male and female victim which suggests he’s into both)

Like, ALL the vampires. Every single one. The married couple on the left, Nadja and Laszlo, can both be seen stroking Nandor’s thighs (dude on the right), Nadja had a thing with a potential female victim and they both fucked the wrinkly guy on the right in the photo below. I cannot overstate how bi they all are.

Don’t get me wrong, I prefer the way it works in the show. Bisexuality has become such a huge part of vampire fiction that I thought it was weird that all the vampires in the movie seemed straight.

Basically I’m just wondering if Jemaine Clement or Taika Waititi have talked about what changed. Or are we just to assume the vampires in the show chose to live together as a sort of queer community?

So, in Tolkein lore, the world was originally flat, with most of the land in the middle (hence Middle Earth). But the Numenorians (men who were rewarded with their own Atlantis-equivalent island for service in the first big war against Melkor, but eventually Power Corrupts etc) tried to invade the uttermost west which was basically Elf Heaven. To put an end to that sort of thing, the creator of the world Bent The World and made it a sphere…but left elves able to treat it like a flat disk. So elves can sail west and reach Elf Heaven, but a man or dwarf or hobbit who sails west will eventually wrap around to the east coast of Middle Earth.
