The Better Angels, 2014.Â
I thought this was a really good movie that allowed the viewer to sink back in time and truly imagine what the world around young Lincoln looked like when he was growing up.
It is on iTunes as well as on Amazon as DVD and rental.

This is an animated movie about Bilal, an Ethiopian ex-slave who became one of the Prophet Muhammad’s closest companions. Really impressed by the production value and the well-cut trailer. Some nice attention to lighting and composition. One to keep an eye out for.
(Saladin Ahmed, from whom I found this, supposes from his knowledge of Bilal’s story that the movie ends with him meeting Muhammad)

Today is a great day in history!
Exactly 150 years ago, Abraham Lincoln And William H. Seward met again after a few VERY tense days apart.
Lincoln had sent Seward to Hampton Roads to stall a meeting between the President and three so-called “peace commissioners” from the confederacy and he was finally able to join his Secretary of State after the vote on the 13th Amendment had been cast and support of the ratifying states had been assured.
In what I think was a great team effort, Lincoln and Seward made the position of the Union clear and left the confederates with little hope to retain their way of life.
While, nowadays, the Hampton Roads conference is not seen as a success, I believe that the outcome is what Seward and Lincoln had in mind to crush even the last hope of a negotiated peace (with benefits).
It was also the last time, these two guys got to work together so well, as they had done many times before.
Lincoln and Seward were the two most unlikely people to become friends – and yet, thanks to kittens, good food, funny stories and feet planted firmly on the ground when necessary, they DID become friends, as much as two politicians in Washington can ever be friends.
This day was the last they got to share a victory – and while it makes me sad to think that all the other victories that were to follow could not be celebrated, they had that day back in 1865.
