My mom likes to tell me about how when I was a little kid riding public transport with her I'd always smile and giggle and chat with weird old ladies who smelled like cat pee and homeless folks and strangers dressed in bizarre outfits but any time a tidy and respectable businessman in a suit and tie waved at me I'd immediately clam up, and she takes a great deal of pride in my supposed inherentability to clock personalities but the truth is I do vaguely remember those bus rides, and it was never about the clothes or the hair or the smell, but more because everyone "strange" asked interesting questions and listened to what I had to say and seemed to think about what I said while the neat and tidy and rigid folks only ever acted like they were going through the motions, which was boring as hell and also pretty annoying

I used to be able to scream so loud that it would physically hurt people if they were too close to me. I used this talent for sound effects in horror productions for high-school theater, and it was fun making the entire audience jump because noone was prepared for it. One day, it just stopped. If I tried to scream it would just be this raspy rush of air that had no solid sound to it and instead made my throat hurt. Suddenly this random thing that I was (in)famous for and smugly proud about was gone and that was it. I can't yell as loud as that scream was even with all of my lungs behind it, and even voice training has done nothing to bring it back. I just lost the ability to be a banshee with what felt like zero warning.

It's been over a decade since I last thought about it, but this post reminded me. Shit sucks.

At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.

Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”
