Kriz is a minimalist house located in Santa Croce, Italy, designed by Boselli Arredamenti. This project takes place in a small town in the Karst plateau, not far from Trieste, characterized by its narrow alleys stretching around the old dwellings, overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. The objective was to avoid the addition of an indoor staircase that would have taken up too much room, so the architects opted for a tiny elevator and staircase that has been moved outside. The total absence of furniture, substituted by lightweight sliding elements made in Dacron conceals endless possibilities, including the elevator.

“Last year was tough for a lot of people and we were no exception. My parents lost their jobs, my health was awful and things just seemed a little dark. All our luck was tied to the house we were in. My family lives in Singapore and our house was built on an old Chinese burial ground site next to a columbarium. Some cab drivers would refuse to go there at night because they believed it to be cursed. I never believed things like that but Singapore made us much more suspicious. We decided to downsize and within days of signing the lease for the new apartment our luck began to change. Not long after my mum got a new job and next thing I knew we are booked on a holiday to Myanmar.

The trip had a much more significant purpose. My mum finally got to see the city that her aunts came from. For a while they played a significant part in raising her - Burmese women who married into the family. They were highly educated and worked for the British military as translators, before eventually moving to England. I grew up with stories of them dancing in their beautiful headdresses. It was great to learn so much about my family’s stories, how their past became my present.”
