90% of writing advice can be thrown out the window for your first draft.

Show don’t tell? Ignore.

Basic grammar and punctuation? Unnecessary. 

Physical descriptions of characters? Don’t need to bother. 

Solid plot? That’s for later. 

The words don’t come as fast when you’re thinking of the best way to put them together. It doesn’t have to be pretty, or much more than inconsistent nonsense.  The point is to have it exist.

Effective storytelling is for subsequent drafts! Go write some nonsense!

I’m looking specifically for writers who write lgbt contemporary! I see all these writeblr intro posts but it seems like they’re all fantasy or scify writers or something like that, and most of my mutuals are, too, and it’s starting to feel lonely!

it’s officially nanowrimo - everything is in flames already. but that’s okay.

this year, nanowrimo is and has to be a back burner event for me. something i do when i can, and something i know i may very well not complete. i am so busy this month, busier than i ever have been in november, so writing is going to have to be squeezed in whenever possible, if at all. 

but i’m okay with the flames. i’m okay with the craziness of november, and the fact that nano has to be less of my focus this time around. 

my writing matters no matter if i complete nano or not. 

cheers to half-doing nano this year! excited to still be participating and feeling good about what i think i’ll be able to complete this month.

we all joke but if nano legitimately upsets you or otherwise makes your life harder, don't do it. you are more important than any writing event, even if it seems like everyone is doing it

if you want to participate but know you can't make the 50,000 word goal, then participate--on a smaller scale. don't feel bad about putting yourself first

You know what I think is really cool?

You created something original, unique, and wonderful from nothing. 

It doesn’t matter if you’re good at writing or bad at writing, if it’s a character, a drabble, an unfinished novel or a completed short story. 

Every single time you write something — anything — you creating something out of nothing, and the world is a better place for it.

Even if you think it’s good, even if you think it’s bad… It doesn’t take away from the fact that you made something — it exists now, when it previously didn’t.

I think that’s beautiful, and deserves more recognition.

You know what? I think it’s a good thing that the author is always the biggest fan of their work. 

I always hear about how hard it is that writers don’t get as much external validation as they would like, and how we just have to push through anyway and it’s like

Yeah, that’s true. It would be nice to have more people interested in your story, but at the same time? If we came to believe engagement was the measure of how good we are? Silence or negative feedback would be hell. 

Look at it this way: Your project will always, always, always have at least one fan, if you choose to stick with it. And one fan is really all you need to get it done. 

Celebrate your work, even if no one else is. Keep making posts about it that get 10 notes. Revel in the knowledge that you are your projects biggest fan.

And keep writing anyway.
