Cultivating My Dream Life
@outgrowinglove asked what I’m doing on a daily basis to achieve the life that I want. Here’s how I’m doing it:
1. Studies - I got my bachelor’s in Psych last year, and was accepted into a master’s program. I deferred my start date because there are other things I’d prefer to put my focus into for now. Really, my degree(s) are just for show, I don’t plan to use them career wise but they are nice to have. In the longer term, I may pursue a Psy.D degree.
2. Career - I’m currently training to be a comprehensively certified pilates instructor, which is a 500 hour program. My days are spent teaching and observing. We also have two reformers in our home. I didn’t expect to enjoy teaching as much as I do, and I will have the lifelong ability to keep myself in shape. I plan to open a boutique pilates studio where I teach small group classes but prioritize private clients at a minimum of $150/hr., and I’ve been touring studio spaces. My fiancée owns his own business and is very excited about the idea of helping me to build my own.
3. Knowledge + Language - I’ve always been a bookworm, I read everyday. Lately I’ve been listening to mostly audiobooks because I like that I can multitask while listening, but I really need to get back to physical books.
As far as language goes, I’m nearly fluent in Spanish thanks to school, but I’m interested in picking up French. I’ve done some research into in-person language classes near me, now I just need to pull the trigger.
4. Culture - I enjoy the arts, although there isn’t a large scene where I live. As a child, my mom enrolled me in Saturday art classes and I’ve considered picking art back up and taking adult classes. If I see a ballet production that piques my interest, we attend. We enjoy live music whether that’s a rave or seeing The Weeknd in concert twice. I also love burlesque/cabaret shows, as well as Cirque du Soleil.
I think it’s important as a young adult to explore hobbies. I’ve taken ballet classes which I love, horseback riding, pole dancing classes, and probably many others.
5. Social - We live amongst many HNW individuals, one of them is a client of mine. Naturally, we are both introverts, but find ourselves being invited to outings with other couples anyway. I hosted my first dinner party a few months ago, which was a hit.
I’m slowly but surely building a small circle of elite women to spend time with. I’ve started browsing potential boards/foundations to join. We’ve dabbled with the idea of joining private, members-only club.
6. Finance - I’ve learned so much about money from my fiancée, and I’ve surprisingly taught him some things about money as well. I had a managed investment account before we met, still do. I don’t have the patience to hand select potential investments, which is why I went the managed route. We have a joint bank account (I don’t contribute to it) and I also have an authorized Amex. Younger me loved to sell-off stocks if there was something designer I was after, mature me knows that it’s a waste, incurs capital gains tax, and that I should just put it on the Amex 😂
Any cash I receive goes straight into my personal high yield savings account, and I decide from there whether it goes into my investment portfolio or not.
