hello, i just wanted to ask u as a fellow 2year med student how u do to find time for other activities, i only have uni and i still struggle with going to some classes and finishing all my work, and also how do u find the motivation? i love ur content and thank u so much.
Hey! Actually, great question and I can relate to your struggle. It took me some years as well to find a balance between studying and private life. Basically, you are never done with studying in med school. It helped me to really set boundaries for myself (e.g. no studying after 8PM or on Sundays, whatever works for you) and adjust my expectations from being perfect to being enough. Another (huge!) step was to work more efficiently. In my first year, I went to every lecture and spend hours writing summaries - what a waste of time! Top tips would be: 1. Only attend lectures that are useful. Is the professor explaining the topic and adding value to your study experience? Great! Or are they just reading their PowerPoint presentation word by word? Time to leave the lecture or at least do something more useful instead, like read the script in half the time. 2. Active revision with anki or practice questions. Try to find one or two people and devide the topics to create Ankis or use premade decks. They don’t need to be pretty, they need to be reviewed! 3. give yourself some grace. You will have good and bad days and good and bad exams. In the end, you will graduate as a doctor!
And also: discipline, routine and well set up systems >> motivation
Hope that helps! You can do it!!
M2 diaries 19/100: Despite all the cardiology questions, the day went ok. It was quite hot in the library (without AC) and I found it hard to concentrate. 🫀
M2 diaries 18/100: Turns out, Nephrology chapters aren’t due until next week. Instead, I studied Rheumatology which I find a lot more enjoyable. Practice questions included a lot of Cardiology so of course I did really bad lol.
M2 diaries 17/100: Today‘s chapters were all about Immunology (love), the practice questions went deep into Internal Medicine (hate). Overall, I am exhausted and super unmotivated for the upcoming days (Nephrology all the way) (hate hate).
M2 diaries 16/100: This day was all about insurances and basic infrastructure of e.g. palliative care. The practice questions also covered some alternative medicine. I decided to not waste any capacities on this useless topic. I tried to make space for some social time hence I finished my studies at 23:30. 💀
M2 diaries 15/100: Ophthalmology day 2 went also really well and so did my ophthalmology semester final exam!
M2 diaries 14/100: First day of Ophthalmology went really well! Since I am considering specializing in this field, that was very reassuring.
M2 diaries 13/100: Totally forgot to post about Pathology. It was an absolute mess and that day was the first time I actually failed the 60% mark in my practice questions. Anyways, life goes on.
M2 diaries 12/100: Second and last day of forensic medicine went smoothly. Snack was delicious. I am so falling behind on my M2 Ankis, but with the semester finals going on, I simply don’t find the time for it.
M2 diaries 11/100: First day of forensic medicine. I was happy that I remembered a lot from my course last year and did quite well in the practice questions.
M2 diaries 10/100: Infectiology? Done! Break? Here I come!
M2 diaries 09/100: Parasitology was absolutely disgusting. Practice questions went okay. Only one more day of studying before my long awaited break.
M2 diaries 08/100: Studied all the virus diseases today and cried over the HIV meds.
M2 diaries 07/100: I turned into a productivity beast today. I finished the chapters and practice questions and made Anki flashcards for 4 lectures. My snack was delicious. Low light that I didn’t get the miso soup I was craving because the store only accepted cash money.
M2 diaries 06/100: I started the Infectiology section and treated myself with the best matcha oat latte in town. My sister in law came for a visit and we went to the opera (Tschaikowski‘s Pique Dame).
M2 diaries 05/100: I’m done with pharmacology! No, literally! Today was the last pharma day in the study plan. Honestly, I expected worse. Of course, I will need to do a lot of revision, but overall, things are going well so far!
