He’s studying her silently, the way her hand relaxes at the handle of her gun and the way her own eyes slip back and forth between his car and him. She seems harmless now, but he still can’t tell if inviting her along is something that he can trust– if he can trust her. It’s hard to tell nowadays. One day a person can be your friend and the next, they’re leaving you behind to deal with a herd of them all by yourself.

Scar tissue has no character. It’s not like skin. It doesn’t show age or illness or pallor or tan. It has no pores, no hair, no wrinkles. It’s like a slip cover. It shields and disguises what’s beneath. That’s why we grow it; we have something to hide.
An instantaneous feeling of relief washes over him, muscles in his body less tense than they were when he had the ability to look into the barrel of the gun that was being pointed at him. His hands remain visible for a few moments more, wanting to do her the service of showing that he wasn’t going to try anything slick. He nods before arms go limp and fall to his sides. Her reasoning for wanting to take the car from him was obvious, but he can only wonder if she was so urgent to leave because she had a place to go to.

The gun is still clutched in her hand, but her grip relaxes. Bone-white knuckles regain their colour as she places it back in her belt. Feels it's familiar weight against her side. She shifts from one foot to the other, gaze moving from him to the car and back again. Not used to this .. behaviour. How calm and easy he talks. Making her want to trust him. To believe that there are still good, human people. People who mean no harm.
