Gearing up for The 72 Project
Long time, no speak. I've been busy though. My Masters course is going well, only got my Thesis left to do now...and the feature film we are going to shoot in July. I could harp on with what it's about but here is the jist:
The film will be shot and edited in 72 hours. That's a feature film, not a short. It's gonna be a giant task.
To prove we've done it legit and to engage with local people, we will premiere the film the day afterwards at The Giant Screen (the biggest screen in the Midlands...the word Giant is key here).
I'm one of the co-producers on the film and I will also be 1st Assistant Director. I have spoke about the role of 1st AD before as not being my favorite, but I feel confident with this project due to the amount of work the team have put into it.
Wanna know more about the Project? Check out the link after the drop:
http://the72project.org/ Most importantly, we are currently crowdfunding for part of our budget on Kickstarter. The money raised will help feed, transport and accommodate the crew during the few days of prep that we will need and the 72 hours of shooting itself. We have had £1,740 pledged at the time of writing, which is ace...but we have a long way to go yet. With your help, we are going to make an awesome film. Check out our crowdfund here
I've also shot and edited a short clip for our crowdfund, showcasing filmmakers from the Midlands at the Birmingham Film Studios for a networking event.

Overdue Entry
It has been a while since I have updated this. I am glad to say that it hasn't all been down to procrastination. I started this blog as an outlet for my film interests and I will continue to do so. Luckily for me my film interests have been more pro-active in actually making them.
I was accepted onto a Masters course this October for Digital Feature Film Production. I feel very privileged to be a part of this for many reasons. The main one being that I will have my first feature film credit by the end of it.
Myself and the rest of the Msc students will be making a film for the The 72 Project. We will have as much pre-production as possible, just like any other film...but the once the cameras start to roll we have 72 hours to shoot and edit an entire feature film. Sounds crazy but it has been done before in Ireland & Australia so we are really happy to bring this to the UK. The only difference is we have no festival behind us to back the film so it will be all through word of mouth and our own initiatives! The film will be shot in and around Birmingham and we are hoping to attract a number of talented people to the project. I will no doubt update my Tumblr with what is happening regarding the film but you can follow everything about it at http://the72project.org/blog/ I have a profile about my involvement also here.
I have also just finished working on a short film with a close friend of mine, Christian Evans, called Ochus Bochus. I was 1st AD and also undertook some minor producing jobs, mainly a crowdfunding plan with the director...which I am happy to say was successful*. We experienced a few tough moments and some production bumps along the way but this was dwarfed by the amount of plans that worked, the sheer amount of laughs we had, the great footage we captured and the fantastic crew/cast we had to work with. In summary it has really strengthened the real reason I want to make films: to have fun. I will forever work within a professional capacity but I do all of this because I want to have fun and enjoy my life doing what I love. The fact it is a job which pays (quite well, hopefully) is a delightful second bonus.
This was my first time as AD on a film and I believe it may be my last. I was capable in my role and no doubt aided the project immensely but the reality is if you want to succeed as an AD, you need to be a ruthless bastard. Which in truth, I am not. I will touch upon this in a future post as I feel it needs a stronger explanation into how I do not like the role but how I also see it as one of the most important during principle photography.
Throughout the year I have worked on different film projects with the aim of bettering myself through trying to understand every aspect of the craft. My reasoning is simple: I do not think I can achieve my potential as a Director if I do not understand all aspects of the film making process and respecting them. Once the 72 Project has wrapped in July 2014, I will be aiming to get my first independent feature film made. I am not sure what journey I will undergo but I know my main focus will be making a quality film that gets audiences talking. I want to capture attention. I want to cause controversy. I want to stimulate excitement in British Independent Film making.
I also want to break down industry myths. I want to break down the wall that separates people from the process and the sheer amount of work involved. I want to share the journey. So I best get to work then.
P.S. It has been some time since I have reviewed anything. Christmas is coming up so I may jot one or two down.
*Please bear in mind we did reach the full goal with donations outside of Indiegogo. We tried to enter these donations as a credit card finish but for some reason Indiegogo wouldn't accept it! Suffice to say we had enough to finish the film because we did reach our goal outside of the CF.
