how the fuck did we get from there to where we are today
hi i started listening to tanis bc of you then moved onto the black tapes and i was wondering what other podcast recs you may have? thanks 💜💜🙆🏻
hi! ok so if we’re just talking general recs i’ve got a list over here for your perusal.
a few updates: the bugle is still on hiatus but allegedly coming back at some point without john oliver (boo) but instead with a rotating series of guest hosts including hari kondabolu (yay!)
gastropod looks at food through the history of science and history. um yes please. almost stereotypically npr in its sensibilities (two smart pleasant ladies make pleasant jokes) but i am into it.
switched on pop features a musicologist and a songwriter analyzing pop songs in a very nerdy way; not just lyrically but like “here’s what’s going on with this chord progression.” much like reply all and gastropod, part of the charm is the interplay between the two hosts, who are clearly friends irl and who clearly get a big kick out of each other.
stuff mom never told you looks at cultural phenomena and history through a feminist, progressive lens. there’s years and years of backlogs so i’d suggest going through and specifically picking out episodes on topics that already interest you (and you’ll probably find something because seriously they have covered, like, everything you can imagine)
if we are talking fiction-podcasts specifically, i’m gonna take this space to harp on a bunch of stuff i’ve mostly already mentioned:
alice isn’t dead is, for my money, maybe the best fiction podcast out there. there’s ten episodes but it’s a complete story arc and hits the mark pretty much always. it’s written by one of the night vale writers, so it’s got a really particular spooky/clever sensibility, but if it works for you then it will work for you. (a few months ago, i played the first ep for my younger cousins and they kept saying “ok OBVIOUSLY we need to hear the next one” until it was past midnight and we’d mainlined the whole thing. during a terrible storm. i am not a role model.)
the thrilling adventure hour leans hard into the old-timey radio conceit, in a charmingly tongue-in-cheek fashion. lots of enjoyable celebrity guest stars. the two best recurring features are ‘sparks nevada’ and (my personal fave) ‘beyond belief’ although beyond belief comes with a definite alcohol cw.
zombies run! is technically a fitness app but i swear to god, think of it as a podcast designed to be listened to while running/walking/biking, with frequent breaks of whatever music you normally work out to. it has great characters. it has plot arcs and seasons. it has stellar representation. it will make you cry. it will be worth it.
the bright sessions purports to be a series of recordings between a therapist and her supernaturally gifted (think x-men) special patients. the plot arc emerges gradually, so i’d say give it a few episodes to grow on you. creative use of a “found audio” format, and, like alice and zombies run, it passes the bechdel test left and right, which is nice.
lastly i wanna double down on insisting that the adventure zone begins as a d&d/comedy show and slowly evolves into one of the most engaging, imaginative narrative podcasts available today. and even though everyone involved in its creation is a dude, it’s maybe worth noting that there are a number of great, well-realized female npc’s.*
*all the podcasts i’ve mentioned here are at least decent with regards to gender politics, because, well, i like what i like, but it’s striking in the adventure zone because of how gleefully irreverent the show is in so many other ways. everyone’s totally nonchalant about these awesome women doing awesome things, and you really get the sense the characters have fascinating backstories and adventures of their own. i genuinely wish that more professional showrunners would take a page out of griffin mcelroy’s (profane, goofy, at times surprisingly heartfelt) playbook.
one time i was hanging out with these two friends of mine, women i admire very much, and we reached this twilight zone moment where we realized that each of us had, at one point:
dated a man who treated us very badly
and for whom we made many sacrifices
and who we defended to our friends
because we needed to be supportive
of his “genius”
yes, he treated us badly but he was so smart and talented that maybe it was unfair to expect him to play by society’s rules, we told ourselves
and it felt kind of embarrassing to demand something as gauche as kindness (ugh) or maturity
from a “genius”
we lived in fear of being The Nagging Girlfriend/Wife Who Doesn’t Understand Her Man’s Unique Vision.
you know, the woman from the first half of any biopic about a great man. the first wife, the one he divorces before act two.
instead we dreamed of being The Good, Supportive Girlfriend/Wife Who Knows Sometimes You Must Make Compromises.
you know, the woman from the later half of any biopic about a great man. the second or sometimes third wife, depending on how long he lived or how many affairs he had.
it was genuinely chilling, because the longer we talked, the more it felt like all three of us had been handed the same invisible and very detailed script. we are all extremely liberal feminists and yet we’d still bought the whole narrative hook line and sinker, and i don’t think any of us fully realized how fucked up it was until we heard it from each other’s mouths.
i should note, maybe, that these two friends of mine are two of the most brilliant, talented, competent people i know. they were, in both cases, just as brilliant as the boy they sacrificed for. also they were, in both cases, capable of maintaining this brilliance while still tending to their own needs like an adult and treating the people around them with a fundamental level of respect.
so in case it helps anyone out there right now, struggling white knuckled to last into the second half of an imagined Great Man biopic: there is no level of intelligence or skill high enough to exempt a man (or a woman or anyone anywhere else on the gender spectrum) from the basic requirements of human decency. i don’t care if he is moving shit around with the power of his mind like matilda, he still has to say “please” and “thank you” and consider the feelings of the people around him. if he cannot or will not do these things, he is not a genius, he is a baby. AT BEST.
also, you are not the love interest of this movie. you are the fucking protagonist.
Schuyler Sisters // WORK!!
An Open Letter To Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Dear Mr Miranda,
It’s about 5:30 AM where I live (I live in Scotland) and I just watched your final curtain call with tears in my eyes. They were tears of sadness and tears because I’m so thankful and proud of you and the cast.
The reason I am writing this, so early in the morning, is because I want to thank you and your music because it has inspired me and possibly saved me. (also because my mum goes to work at 5 AM and she’s so damn loud when she gets up) I am a 16 year old teenager with an unknown disability which affects my motor skills (I can’t walk and I don’t have a lot of dexterity in my hands.) Despite this I am mentally able and to some people, considered smart. Along with that I have some mental health issues, I suffer from depression and anxiety. There are times when it got so bad, I attempted to take my own life, I didn’t see the point in life anymore and everyday was just getting darker and darker.
Then, one night my mum ordered pizza, so I went into the living room to have my dinner and my sister was listening to something, something called Hamilton. A Hip hop styled musical about the American founding father, Alexander Hamilton. Now, due to our very different tastes in music, I was initially reluctant to listen to it. (even though I do like musicals and hip hop, weird, right?) Eventually, my sister did get me to listen to the opening number and then I decided to listen to more of it and then I was hooked and became a lil’ obsessed, I admit. (Thank you, sis) I listened to the soundtrack like, everyday, well, simply because I loved it and I loved the music, the story, the characters (Eliza, my angel.) and the cast themselves. (They are literally some of the best humans to ever walk the earth.)
If I’m being honest, which I am. I loved it because I could connect with it and inspire me, I connect with Hamilton himself, a penniless orphan born out of wedlock (I am neither of these things) desperate to rise up and prove himself, make a difference and not throw away his shot. Despite his the difficulties in early life and later life, he never gave up. This is what got me thinking, if I throw away my shot, now, and just give up. What difference will I make? If I hold on and work harder, then I’ll go a lot further. Maybe not start a financial system or defend the constitution or fight a war and start a country. I could make a difference, I could help people from disaster, I could save someone’s live or multiple lives. I could improve situations in the world, if I just don’t throw away my shot and give up when it gets tough. I could make a difference because in the future people might need someone like me and if I’m not there to help them when the times calls….who will? This isn’t just a thank you message to a man who might have just saved my life and inspired to get up and stand up for what I believe in, this is a message to everyone whose days are dark and feeling like giving up. DON’T. Because if Hamilton has taught me anything, it’s that sometimes the people you need aren’t the people you would expect them to be.
I use to go around everyday ”thinking what’s the point of anything, no one will care about what I’ll do today, tomorrow and the next day. We all die at some point and the world doesn’t care unless you’re famous, so I might just die right now because it doesn’t make a difference to the world, no matter what I do.”
But now everyday I’m like “Look around, Look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now. Today is a new day and I could do something today that will make a difference in my life or someone else’s and change tomorrow, I am in control and I do matter and someday I might just change the world.” (I also hope to see the show when it comes to London, it would be a dream come true.)
So, to end this very long thank you note/post. I would like to thank The cast of Hamilton: An American Musical and everyone involved making it aand especially Mr Lin-Manuel Miranda, for changing my life for the better and I’m sure you did the same thing for many others. May whatever the cast decide to do in the future, fill you with happiness and success because you deserve it.
Thank you, Thank you very much. (I would thank you more but I can’t thank you enough.)
If you read this, Lin, which I hope you will because you’ve help me (and others) in so many, many different ways and I really want you to know that.
(please guys pass this around not just for Lin but for others going through dark times.)

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOST
this fucking sucks and makes me so angry because I DON’T WANT TO ELECT A FUCKING FACIST. The RNC is running an actual, definable fucking FACIST and I can either vote for this shit, or I can stand back and allow facism to take the helm of my country! And I know she’s not much better, but what are we saying to the world when we go “she was just as bad anyway” and facism takes the lead??
We can’t have no president. Even if we all abstain from voting, we can’t have no president. Even if there are only three voters in the entire country, we will have a president. WHAT THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO DO???
I mean no offense but hilary clinton is literally just as bad and nothing really matters

Reblogging this again to add some pertinent links, because I couldn’t find one definitive roundup post. A note: Blood banks in Orlando are reporting that they are AT CAPACITY and urge people to make appointments to return in the coming days. Blood has a shelf life. Also, unfortunately, no FDA bans have been lifted, which means gay men are still restricted from donating. I agree, that’s horrible. The Washington Post has a large collection of links and information which is updating as news develops, including articles to send your racist relatives who insist this attack wasn’t homophobic in nature. It was.

Want to donate?
Equality Florida has set up a GoFundMe for victims of the Pulse shooting. This is the best place to donate. You can donate to Orlando hospitals through the Orlando Health Foundation. The Orlando Youth Alliance provides services to LGBTQ+ youth. The Center is Orlando’s largest LGBTQ+ organization and is taking donations.
Remember, even the shooter’s father insists this was not based on religious beliefs or ideologies. Do not use this horrific incident as an excuse to attack Muslims. These were the actions of one person driven by hate. Don’t perpetuate that hate. The Medium has posted a guide to contacting your local representatives about gun control, which you should if you are able to.
Equality Florida has an updating list of links and information as well.

I just learned that some websites use cookies to adjust prices. That is, if you visit a certain website a lot the price will increase.
You can tell if that’s the case by checking the same web page on a different browser if you have a different number of stored cookies for that site. I checked something on Chegg and it was $14.95 on Chrome, $19.95 on Firefox, and $16.95 on Safari.
The fix? Clear your cookies for that website.
Reblog, save a wallet.
Plane tickets almost always do this!
PLANE TICKETS DO THIS ALL THE DAMN TIME
When you’re looking for plane tickets and waiting for prices to drop, ALWAYS clear your cookies beforehand and switch between browsers. A friend of mine was looking for a flight and getting prices that were the CHEAPEST at $800-1000, I sent her a link for a round trip that was like $495, and it read as $900 on her computer because she had been hounding the airline site.

other actors: oh well sure, sweatie, [x character] might be gay, it’s all up to interpretation ;)
