Donnie x reader (Love against all odds)
For @tmnts-world, sorry for the wait!
A while had passed since the invasion of Krang, and the brothers still remained, happily living in the sewers of New York City. The brothers had a bit more leeway with patrol since the NYPD was on their side. They were still cautious; Donnie never told his brothers that he kept a sample of the purple ooze… just enough to make him human for about 24 hours. He had been saving for the right time… for the right person.
It was a warm night in New York, and the city was asleep. The brothers had just finished their patrol and were headed back to the lair. They made their way from rooftop to rooftop, flying through the air.
“Uh, hey guys?” Donnie said nervously
The brothers momentarily stopped and turned towards him.
“What’s up, Don?” Leo asked
“I think I’m gonna stay out a bit later than usual. Ya know, get some fresh air.” Donnie answered, trying not to sound suspicious.
“We’ve been outside for like, hours bro. We got lots of fresh air out here!” Mikey jokes, “Want us to join ya?“
"Uhh no. I want to go check out the museum again… ya know, nerd stuff.” Donnie lied
“Alright, just call if you run into any trouble, and be careful. Suns coming up soon.” Leo replied, “Alright, we’re on the move again!” HE instructed as the remaining brothers leaped back into the air.
Donnie sighed in relief as his brothers disappeared into the distance. He waited on the rooftop for about another hour until he could see the faint light of the sun start to lighten the sky. He pulled out his notebook from the large pockets in shorts and flipped through the pages, finding the page labeled.
Step 1: Find a backpack hidden on the roof of the Rockefeller plaza building.
Step 2: Drink ooze at 5:30 am (sunrise at 5;50)
Step 3: Change into the clothes hidden in the backpack.
Step 4: Enter the Rockefeller building through the escape hatch, sneak around to the elevator and ride down to the main floor.
Step 5: Set timer on watch! Need to be back on the roof of Rockefeller building at precisely 23 hours after consumption of ooze.
Donnie took a deep breath as his watch alarm started to go off. “Alright, it’s 5:15.”
He made his way to the Rockefeller plaza rooftop. Once he arrived, he went over to the small ventilation pope and pulled off the cover, revealing the backpack. He took out the clothes from the bag, as well as the purple ooze he had in his pocket.
“Okay, Donnie… you can do this. It’s just 24 hours, you’ll be fine. Just act normal… whatever that means.” he whispered to himself. He looked at his clock, which read 5:29, and waited for the numbers to change. As soon as 5:30 hit, he opened the small sample of the purple ooze and quickly drank it. Moments later, his body began to morph, his green skin now turning beige, shaggy red/brown hair began to fall from his head, and his hands now sporting two new fingers. Once the transformation was complete, he quickly threw the clothes and shoes that no longer fit him into the backpack and changed into the new pair. When he had finished, he pulled out his phone and opened the camera. He took a deep breath before switching the camera to selfie mode. His eyes widened at the sight of the human face that replaced his own.
“Woah…” he marveled at the sight of his freckles and hair. Just then, his alarm went off again, signaling him to make his way out of the building into the streets of NY…. as a human.
He threw the backpack back into the pipe, replaced the cover, and made his way into the building. He reached the elevator and clicked the ‘main’ button; as the doors began to close, a hand came in, stopping the gates from closing.
“Morning.” a man in a black business suit said as he entered the elevator in a hurry, looking down at his phone, slightly irritated.
Donnie stood frozen, unsure of what to do. “Uhhh… uh what… what floor?” He asked nervously, forgetting that he looked totally normal on the outside.
“main,” The man answered swiftly and sternly.
Donnie stood in the corner of the elevator, studying the man’s behavior and mannerisms during the incredibly silent ride.
“H-have a nice day!” Donnie felt disappointed when the man ignored him but instantly forgot when he was face to face with people trying to load the elevator as he got off.
Donnie frantically made his way outside to the busy, busy, BUSY streets of New York. He began to apologize profusely to everyone he ran into, soon after realizing that they didn’t care. He ran over to the crosswalk and waited for the ‘walk’ sign to appear. When it finally did, he waltzed into the street and was almost hit by an oncoming taxi.
“Watch out!” Someone yelled as they pulled him out of the way.
Donnie lost his balance, falling to the ground. He looked up, blocking the sun from his eyes to see a person standing above him who looked around his age. He awkwardly stood back up, brushing off his pants.
“Uh, thanks,” Donnie grumbled as he felt the effects of his new, not so tough human body.
“Yeah,” they said, “but why didn’t you wait until that guy turned?” the stranger asked.
“Well, because the sign had the go symbol,” he replied.
They started to laugh. “You’re not from here… are you?”
“No, I’m from the sewer… Syracuse. Yeah, I’m from Syracuse.” Donnie stuttered
The stranger laughed. “Oook… well, I’m Y/N."
"Donatello, but you can call me Donnie,” he replied, holding out his hand to shake theirs.
“Donnie, well, it was nice to meet you, but I have to go,” Y/N said as they started to walk away.
“Oh, are-do… are you going to work?” Donnie asked
“Um, no, I’m going to the museum. I know it sounds lame, but-”
“No!” Donnie interrupted. “I love the museum! Well… I love museums; I’ve never actually gone to this one during the day."
"Wait, so you say you’ve gone here… at night?” Y/N giggled
“Oh no,” Donnie blurted nervously, “what I mean to say was- I - I have dreams about…going,” he mumbled awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck.
Y/N chuckled. “You’re funny… well, if you want to come with me, you can. I don’t have a lot of friends, so…”
Donnie’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Uh, yeah! I’d like that” he smiled.
They made their way to the museum, pointing out all the little details and telling each other random facts they knew about history and science. To anyone else, they looked like they had known each other for years by how comfortable they were with each other. Hours had passed when they reached the space exhibit; by then, most tourists had left as it was a half-hour till closing time.
“I’ve always related to stars,” Donnie remarked. “They all look so close together from far away, but up close… they are all so…”
“Lonely?” Y/N interjected, meeting eyes with Donnie. “Yeah, I know the feeling."
"I guess I just don’t see how someone as… amazing as you could be lonely,” he whispered.
“I thought the same about you,” Y/N replied. They continued to stare into each other’s eyes until an unknown force brought their lips together. Their hands slowly intertwined as the room seemed to melt away. They could’ve stayed there forever, but the loud voice suddenly booming over the intercom letting the guests know it was closing time, prevented that from happening.
“Uhh, well. I guess… we should say goodbye,” Donnie mumbled.
“Well… we don’t have to,” Y/N suggested. “I do have an apartment… if you wanted to…"
Donnie’s face turned bright red "I-you-um… yeah. Yeah, that would be cool,” Donnie stuttered, feeling another wave of heat reach his face.
They made their way back to the apartment, and one thing led to another. The passionate night ended with the two of them sharing their feelings for each other, as Y/N fell asleep in Donnie’s arms.
Donnie woke up in a jolt to the sound of his watch alarm. He rubbed his eyes and looked at his watch, which read 4:15am. Donnie looked down at his feet, slowly beginning to transform back and frantically but quietly started to gather his things. As he put his clothes back on, he looked at Y/N, who was still asleep in bed. Donnie softly smiled, knowing this was the last time he would see them, and finished getting ready. He opened the window to the apartment, but he bent over and kissed Y/N on the head before he left. He quickly dashed through the window as the ooze began to wear off. He made his way back through the big city and around to the Rockefeller rooftop to gather his things. He gazed back over the city as the sun began to rise over the horizon and sighed.
“Goodbye, Y/N,” he whispered to himself.
Donnie made it back to the lair before the sun rose over the city. He shuffled inside slowly, looking down at his hands that were once again his own.
“Hey Don, there you are. We were worried.” Leo exclaimed as he ran over to Donnie, who was still looking at his hands. “…Don?"
"Hmm?” Donnie snapped back into reality. “Oh yeah, I um… I got distracted,” he said as he walked over to his room. Leo continued to watch his brother until he disappeared into his room, wondering what was going through his mind. Donnie sat in his room for hours until his cell began to vibrate; he looked down at the text that lit up his screen.
'Hey Donnie, it’s Y/N. I was a little bummed that you weren’t here when I woke up lol text me when you can!’
His eyes were suddenly covered with a film of tears.
'Hey, sorry. I had an emergency come up, so I went back home.’
'That’s okay! Sorry btw, I snuck your number into my phone. You are super cool, and I didn’t want to lose contact with you!’
Donnie smiled. “Well, she doesn’t have to see me if we just talk,” he whispered to himself.
The two continued to text and talk over the phone for a couple of weeks; their relationship grew as they found more connections between them. It became a regular for Donnie to look forward to a phone call at a specific time every day. His brothers knew something was going on but never knew what he was doing or who he was talking to.
The evening started approaching as Donnie eagerly waited for his phone to ring. His eyes lit up with excitement when he heard the familiar ring tone go off.
“Hey!” Donnie answered enthusiastically, “What’s up?”
“Hey Don, I was actually thinking about something…” Y/N responded
“Oh yeah? Is it something nerdy? Cause if it is, I’m your guy,” he joked.
“Uh, well, no. I actually thought I could maybe come and … visit you?” Y/N said softly as Donnie’s smile fled from his face. “Syracuse isn’t that far, and I thought-”
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.” Donnie interrupted, “I just have a lot of stuff going on… like-like-”
“Donnie, I-” Donnie felt the pit in his stomach grow as his eyes began to water and quickly ended the call. He stood there, so desperately wanting to call them back… but he knew he couldn’t.
Weeks had passed, and every night on patrol, Donnie hoped he would look down into the street and see Y/N standing there waiting for him… But he never did. More time passed until it had been months since they had spoken. The brothers made their way into the lair after nightly Patrol; Donnie walked sluggishly into his room when his phone began to ring; he looked down to see Y/N’s name across the screen. His breath seemed to leave his body, causing him to collapse on the floor and place his head in his hands.
Mikey approached from outside the room, looking concerned over his older brother.
“Don…?” Mikey asked quietly. Donnie sprung up from the floor and looked over at his brother. He frantically wiped his eyes, trying to hide the fact he had been crying.
"I’m fine, Mikey, I just- just…” he looked down at the ground then back up at Mikey, desperately wanting to tell his secret.
“Mikey, if I tell you something, do you promise not to tell the others?”
Mikey’s eyes widened in anticipation but also worried “yeah, of course, Donnie… are you in trouble?”
“no, nothing like that,” Donnie replied. He motioned for his brother to sit down beside him and told him all about what happened the other day.
“Woahhh,” Mikey exclaimed, slightly jealous of his brother’s Adventure “well, you said you two had been talking for a while, right?” Donnie nodded his head in response to my keys question. “well, I would just be honest with them… tell them what happened, and if they choose not to believe it, then that’s that. End of story, but if they do, then you have a chance!” Mikey beamed
“a chance?” Donny asked tiredly. “I’m not too sure about that, Mikey. I feel like the only reason it happened is because Y/N pitied me.”
“Well, if you don’t try, then you will never know. Maybe that’s true, but if you don’t find out, it’s going to eat you alive.” Mikey responded reassuringly, urging him to take his one chance.
Donnie sighed and looked up at the ceiling. “I guess I could try…”
“That’s the spirit!” Mikey shouted as he jumped up from where he was sitting.
Donnie chuckled and stood up beside his brother, placing his hand on his shoulder.
“Thank you, Mikey,” Donnie said appreciatively. Mikey smiled and nodded and walked out of his room.
“Okay… You’ve got this, Donnie…” He whimpered as he pulled up Y/N’s number and hit call.
“…hello…?” Y/N answered hesitantly.
“hi… I um, I need to explain myself.” Donnie’s voice shook.
“Yeah, you do,” Y/N said sternly.
“I feel like the only reason this happened is because you felt bad for me…” Donnie admitted.
“Felt bad for you?” Y/N blurted, “Don… this happened because I care about you… like a lot. An-and why would I feel bad enough for you to sleep with me? You’re not the only lonely person in NYC!” They shouted.
Donnie took a deep breath and realized that he had to tell Y/N; otherwise, he’d go insane. “Okay, what I’m about to say is going to sound insane. I know it’s going to sound like some crazy excuse or lie I came up with… But I really am telling the truth. And I hope you can see that, because… well because.“
Y/N sighed, "well, go on."
Donnie went into great detail about what had happened earlier that year and how he came to acquire what he and his brothers called the purple ooze. He explained to Y/N what could happen if he reversed the co Helix bonds in the formula and how it could change him from what he is to what they saw that day. Donnie told Y/N all about how he and his brothers came to be, all thanks to April O'Neil. He told them everything, what he liked, what he disliked, his Hobbies, his dreams, favorite food, favorite color, Etc. When he said Y/N absolutely everything he could, he eagerly waited for a response.
Y/N sighed heavily through the phone "Yeah, Don… that does sound crazy…but I also like to believe anything is possible in this world. So if you really are telling the truth, then meet me on top of the building where you said you first met April."
The call ended, and Donnie found himself in his room, shaking.
"Oh god… What did I do?” He blurted out. He stood frozen for a few more minutes, going through all the possibilities in his mind and trying to come up with an Escape Plan. Mikey’s words ran through his head as he thought about his only chance of possibly being happy. He took a deep breath, grabbed his staff, and ran out of the lair. He quickly made his way through New York City, leaping and dodging buildings until he saw a familiar rooftop. He landed quietly, hiding in the shadows and waiting for Y/N to appear.
“Is that you?” a voice called out.
Donnie stood Frozen in the shadows as Y/N appeared.
“yes, it’s me. But before you come any closer, I just want to tell you that I was telling the truth. I don’t want you to be afraid, but I understand if you are…” Donnie shouted.
“I’ll believe that when I see you. I don’t care if you are different; I just want to be with you.” Y/N professed. Donny took one last deep breath and slowly walked out into the light, revealing himself to Y/N.
They gasped quietly at the sight of him, “Why…why didn’t you tell me?"
Donnie’s Ice fell to the ground "because I didn’t want to lose you…"
Y/N smiled sadly and walked over to Donnie, and intertwined their hands.
"I love you, Donnie. I don’t care what you look like; I love you.” Y/N cooed.
“I-I love you too.” Donnie stuttered, trying to hold back tears.
“And even though things will change and probably be a little more difficult… I’m still in if you are.” Y/N said sweetly, pulling him closer. Donnie smiled and look at Y/N, nodding his head. They locked eyes, and once again, their lips were brought together by an unknown Force causing the world around them to melt, leaving only them in that moment.
