We need to view dark romance the same way we view the zombie apocalypse

If there's anything I've taken away from the zomst discourse, it's this.

Listen, we can all agree that the zombie apocalypse is an objectively bad thing that no one actually wants to happen. But no one can deny there’s a sense of catharsis in fantasizing about what you would do in a zombie apocalypse in order to survive. That’s the entire appeal. It’s a scenario that speaks to something internal within us as humans that isn’t driven by logic. So why can't we apply that same reasoning to romance?

Instead of arguing about whether certain scenes should be taken seriously as sa or whether a couple in fiction is unhealthy and toxic, we just need to acknowledge that in reality, this type of relationship isn't okay, but the fact that it appeals to us in story form is speaking to something deeper within us that has to do with people's intimate desire to feel wanted. So much of dark romance is exploring how people externalize the need to feel in control whether that's by exploiting or being exploited in a power dynamic. I feel like there's a much more fascinating discussion there rather than rehashing the same moral debate on what should be condoned in fiction.

I wish androgyny wasn’t so masculine like why is femininity seen as something to avoid or push away. It pisses me off considering i love dressing up and its like im encouraged to be more masculine to be taken seriously.

I literally feel embarrassed wearing fem clothes cuz i feel like im an imposter in my own skin or like some whore begging to be cat called cuz i dared show skin. Even in alt spaces that encourage individuality and defying norms, its always encouraged to be lean masculine like thats what we should strive for.

Tbh there is a tonn of misogyny in society or atleast preference for masculinity so im not surprised. Hell the bi/lesbian phobia is always catering to men with bi woman being stereotyped as being mainly straight or bi men being gay but too insecure to go by that. Dont get me started on the whole “youve js not had the right dick” that is spewed towards lesbians. Chick flicks too. Almost every movie with a female lead is deemed a girls film and something men cant relate to, like the standard movie protagonist for a universal experience has to be a guy (tbh tho its not js woman. Look at any film with any out of the norm background either with ethnicity or upbringing and there is always so much hate for it being unrealistic/unrelatable).

It js pisses me off that androgyny and alt spaces still deem femininity as something to hide. This is literally the reason for the whole “im not like other girls” movement. We can make fun of it all we like but we encourage woman to hide their femininity and push them towards masc presentation and interests js to be taken seriously.

obviously even tho ive mostly been saying this for woman, i think men and others should be able to show femininity without being labelled soft or gay too. Like for as much as i do like femboys, the over sexualisation and stereotypes around them js piss me off. People can be confident and headstrong even if they lean more fem yk?

i might make another post expanding on that point i made about white men being the standard for everything because god… literally in everything, even in so called inclusive alt or nerd spaces it revolves around them and attacks people outside of that range. Even though i probably wont be able to speak much on it cuz well.. im white, the way poc people r treated in fandom spaces like outsiders is js so stupid… like god racism isnt a hard concept to understand like congrats people look different to u and had a different upbringing doesnt mean u act like theyre sub human.

i adore gyaru and visual kei fashion for this reason.

I hate the points about a creators intent. Media isnt something thats set in stone, its something that is gonna be interpreted in multiple ways… and its common albeit annoying af sometimes that its not gonna be taken the same way by everyone. A creator or writer can say all they want about what they wanted the meaning to be or what it was but a show should be judged through what is visible in the writing and scenes. Its why i hate when people use her blue sky/tumblr answers as i feel that it should be obvious in the show. I understand that goose sees jax as a terrible person but the show does a bad job at portraying this. Jax is babyed and given next to no consequences. The patience with her is amazing, like why is every character so passive and accepting… i get why ragatha considering her mom or gangles slow acceptance of the abuse after so long but pomni and zooble? What?! Unlike Bojack, where his relationships r slowly ruined cuz nobody wants to put up with his shit, jax is given every single but of attention by both the show and characters, no wonder people r nicknaming it the jax show. I would like her ending, personally im against the idea that every bad character needs redeemed or to be killed… but they still need some level of push back. Its why i like her abstracting as she refused to accept help and now shes trapped with those thoughts for eternity, but its ruined by the other characters still coddling her by the end, for gods sake pomni literally goes into her head and is willing to abstract for her like who knows what wouldve happened if she wasnt saved by the others.

Overall my main issue is that jax isnt given much push back or shown to have any real consequences for all the shit she did in the show. We can take gooses word for all we like but we have to acknowledge that the show very much pushes this narrative forward that jax js needed fixing and that shes actually soft underneath so shes not that bad like js cuz she feels bad about it doesnt absolve her of all the shit shes done?
