Smoking, drinking, never thinking of tomorrow. A scene as familiar today, amidst the pandemic, as it was when sung by Ella Fitzgerald in 1957. A sophisticated lady, shifting positions on the sofa, confined to the borders of a photograph, or of a song. Why do we feel compelled to chronicle the nonchalant? To express the claustrophobia induced by compressed space and time? When the days become punctuated with ennui, we seek out the action within inaction, and the ways in which even the blandness of boredom can be charged with feeling. This photoset aims to capture the restlessness we feel now within a vintage aesthetic, staging the melodramatic potential of the indoors. The sophisticated lady is no longer dining with some man in a restaurant, but perhaps placing her third order through a food delivery app this week.
