Pantera L, 1973, by Ghia. The De Tomaso Pantera was sold by Ford via their Lincoln-Mercury Division from late 1971 until 1975. The Pantera L (for "Lusso" or luxury) was introduced in 1973 mostly to address many of the faults of early build cars, and equipped with a 266hp version of the Cleveland V8. What’s interesting about these period advertisements is that there’s hardly any mention of De Tomaso, in the first one none at all and second one only in the small print at the bottom. Though the car was designed by Tom Tjaarda at Ghia the bodywork was fabricated at Carrozzeria Vignale. Ghia and Vignale were both taken over by Ford though they severed relations with De Tomaso in 1975 after selling around 5500 cars in the US. De Tomaso continued to use the Cleveland V8, sourcing them from Australia when Ford ceased production of the engine in the North America in 1974
