Okay, no, but the recovery of these two Classic Doctor Who episodes specifically is actually kind of incredible, and I don’t think people fully realize why.
Most recovered missing Doctor Who episodes turned up overseas. Back in the 1960s the BBC sold prints of stories to broadcasters all over the world, and sometimes those stations just… kept them. Meanwhile the BBC wiped or junked their own tapes. That’s how discoveries like the Nigeria find happened.
But The Daleks’ Master Plan is weird.
The serial was considered unusually dark and violent, and censors in Australia and New Zealand rejected it. Those two markets were really important to the BBC’s overseas sales at the time, so without them the whole thing became much less worth distributing internationally. As a result, it just wasn’t widely sold abroad.
And overseas distribution is the main reason most lost episodes have been recovered....
So when the BBC wiped their copies, there weren’t foreign prints sitting in random TV station archives around the world waiting to be rediscovered. So it was just super unlikely any part of this story survived.
Which is what makes this discovery so wild. These episodes didn’t come out of some TV archive on the other side of the planet. They survived likely because a private collector somehow ended up with telerecording prints that were made internally by BBC technicians for quality checks before possible overseas distribution.
For a serial long considered one of the least likely ever to be recovered, finding even two episodes is a minor miracle.
