Norman the Hooded Vulture
Norm is a 3 yr old Hooded Vulture (Necrosyrtes monachus) that I work with. He can be a skitty bby, but he’s a cute fuzz headed bby and he’s so sweet and gentle and I love him so much. <3
( @annoying-anticap-procap-things Here you go! Vulture pics for you! c: )
Got these snaps through the mesh of his aviary today, because if you go in with him he must jump on you in hopes of food, and/or destroy your phone. They go pink in colour when excited, and are named ‘Hooded’ vultures because of their cool fuzzy heads! Too cute!
Vultures are amazing birds and I wish more people appreciated them. :( They clean the ecosystem of carcasses and diseases! Sadly, they are suffering from habitat loss, indiscriminate poisoning, trade for traditional medicine, hunting, and heavy persecution.
This species, has gone from being categorised as ‘Least Concern’ in 2009 to being ‘Critically Endanged’ in 2016.
They have had a population decline of over 80% in the last 50 yrs.
Think that’s bad?
Out of the 23 vultures species on the planet, 10 are on the edge of extinction.
The Slender-Billed Vulture (Gyps tenuirostris) may have as few as 1000 individuals left in the wild. They have had a population decline of 97% since the mid 1990′s. The White-Rumped Vulture (Gyps bengalensis) has had a population decline of 99% since the early 1990′s.
People are predicting total extinction of these species within the next decade or two.
Vultures used to be revered in so many cultures. Please help save vultures! It is International Vulture Awareness Day on 2nd September. Save The Vultures!
Remember guys - Extinction is Forever.
Photographer Nick Brandt (“Across the Ravaged Land”) shows the petrification process of birds whose bodies have been subject to the caustic alkaline salinity of Lake Natron, Tanzania. The high soda and salt content of the water, combined with the lake’s high temperatures, preserves the bodies. Here, Brandt has rescued the remains and arranged them in a simulacrum of life.
