Young voters possess political influence. Our millennial generation now represents more than a third of the Dutch national electorate. Yet a large-scale sense of cynicism towards national and international politics seems stronger than ever. In the wake of Brexit, the Ukraine referendum and the first weeks of Trump, being passive is not an option. In fact, the world would look a lot different if all of generation Y would make itself heard. With the Dutch general election coming up quickly, VOTE2017 is here to consider how (not) voting directly affects our daily lives. It is a temporary platform for independent voices. By means of a video series as well as round table sessions, we explore issues that urgently need a voice. Fed by distrust of the political system as a whole, we find ourselves in the heydays of political cynicism. That’s why we created The Political Utopia, a triptych of surveys on politics, culture and economics. By concentrating on the basic ideas and pillars that shape our society, we move away from conventional political thinking and reflect on what could be the new. Our generation of voters is asking for vision—we want to know what that vision looks like. If 2016 was the year of realizing things, 2017 is here to act upon them.
