Am I so unworthy, so wretched? The stars in your eyes,

those constellations that forged myths around campfires,

signal in shimmering light a coming change in orbit.

My new night sky will be black, back to the void I knew before.

Time to return to pondering paradox; how can Fermi explain

how lonely it feels, stuck on this rock staring up, wishing

for a sign I am not? The era is past. My rocket-ships rust,

Voyager failed to record any response to my message of friendship.

There is no one out there, not for me. Perhaps it's best.

Let's put to rest any thought, any hope of escape - let's

swallow the bitter pill, contain the rot and wait until

the planet gets hot enough to burn away every trace

of this infectious, hopeless, lonely, lonely human race.
