Aveline was a mess of a siren. She was taken cared for by her aunt, Queen Melissa, and became like a sister to her cousins, Cersea, Milana, and Caspian. She was treated as if she was a princess, loved by the people, and liked by the sea creatures. The ones she hung around with anyway.
Aveline had her spot. A heart cave near the shore. When the tide was high, she'd swim into the cave, and wait. She waited for her preys. Of course, as a siren, she had her siren voice. It was breathtaking, some complimented. Cersea told her it might've been one of the most enchanted voice she'd heard, possibly blessed by the Moon Goddess herself. What an honor that would be if it was true.
She would sing a lot in her cave, her soothing voice echoing. She never sprinkled ill intent into her voice, but she had accidentally lead people to dip their toes in the water, collect seashells, and make sandcastles but never to any point that they'd get hurt.
No, she wasn't cruel. It was harmless, and she always gave them little gifts from the sea like ores or gems as an apology. Aveline had trouble controlling her voice since she was surrounded by sirens all the time. She thought humans were funny with their legs, but other than that, a little bit pathetic. Perhaps a little harsh as they did eat fish.
She did have other hobbies, like reading, but only when she could be in her cave. Sometimes, she dared to wish, what life could be like not under the ocean.
"You're being called to the throne room," Andres stated. Not worried, but a little confused, she went. She found her family, all gathered together, with serious faces.
"Did I do something wrong?" Aveline frowned. She glanced at Caspian who was doing a horrible job at keeping his giggles quiet.
"Terribly sorry for being late." A new muffled voice came into the room. Aveline twirled around, thinking a messenger had the answer to the question she had. Instead, she saw four men, human men, in bubbles, being pushed around by other mermaids.
"Aveline, these are our guests." At the last word made her stop. Guests? These were the...
"You! You tried to destroy my cave! You hit me with a pebble by the way. It hurts." She couldn't stop her thoughts from leaving her lips. The comment, more like attack, was directed to the blonde one with gray eyes. The four men raised their eyebrows, unprepared by the outburst of someone who was part of the royal family. She tried her best to keep up with the family image, but her spot was hers.
"I wouldn't have if you could have kept your voice quiet. Someone could've heard!" he fought back. Why did he care if someone heard her voice?
She crossed her arms. "It was late in the afternoon anyway, no one came to the beach during those hours."
"Aveline," her aunt said, almost pleadingly. Finally, she turned to her and kept her mouth shut. "Do you still have all of your marks?" Aveline glanced at her rib, one of her marks still there. There were three more on her body. Different moon phases. She was born with them, and no one knew what they meant.
"What do they have to do with this?" she asked, defensive.
"Sweetheart, we've come to learn that those mark mean something. From the Moon herself." The Moon? "They're your mates."
Caspian cackled, and Milana slapped him at the back of his head. Cersea gave his brother a look, making him quiet. Aveline stood there, shocked and not quite understanding.
"Mates," she repeated, her tone as if tasting fish guts on her lips. "They're lying. Sirens don't have mates. Isn't that a werewolf thing? I'm most certainly not a wolf."
"The Moon goddess chose this for you, Aveline. It is a gift. These men are your mates, like it or not. They have the marks, same as yours." Aveline's mind spun, denying everything her aunt was saying.
"I don't fucking care about what she chose for me! I am not hanging around with them. They hurt me! I'm not going to fall in love with humans." Her anger became evident in the way her eyes glowed, her hands clenched, and her nose flared. Everyone stayed quiet, not daring to break the tension Aveline weaved.
It was then her aunt sighed. "Prince Valencia, please leave us for a moment." They left.
Aveline already knew she lost the battle before the conversation began.
"Aveline," her aunt started. "We need this alliance. It'll benefit our people and our image. More humans have been taken from the West. It's only a matter of time before they start pocking their noses in the North. And, these are your fated lovers."
Aveline said nothing. Her cousin, Cersea, came forward. "Mom, don't you think it's a bit too soon? For Aveline to get married anyway."
"It's fine," Aveline muttered. She swallowed her true emotions. "I apologize for screaming earlier. I'll do it. For the good of the kingdom."
Queen Melissa smiled. "Thank you. Now off you four go. Help her pack."
The four of them went to Aveline's room. Caspian broke his silence. "Dude, there's no way you're getting married before I do."
Aveline snickered, tossing her dark blue hair back. "At least you get to choose, although, I will say who wouldn't wanna get married with me?"
"Bring some shells with you, okay? So we can contact you directly." Milana tucked a bag of sea shells into her bag. Aveline smiled softly.
"Don't worry. I'll make their lives so horrible that they'll have to send me back." They all laughed, ignoring the reality of theirs in the next couple of days. The cousins would be broken up, and Aveline would be left all alone, in a land she'd never seen.
Legs are stupid things, Aveline first said when she became human. Slowly, she turned around, staring into the ocean as she waved goodbye to her family. She could still hear Caspian's laughs as she remembered the moment.
One of the four princes, whom she's still ignoring, gives her a helping hand since she is learning how to walk for the first time. To break the silence, he asks how she got legs.
"If they are blessed by it, sirens do have the ability to transform into a human. I wasn't, but with help from the witches, I was gifted a special necklace to be able to go back and forth."
She stays quiet again, more so because of her nervousness. Although, she would be lying if she says she isn't excited. She's heard stories of the land world, of animals that have legs, and food that is warm.
Aveline hopes she'll be able to explore. Still, she has duties to do, but thankfully her aunt said the alliance isn't to be rushed. As long as Aveline is here, that will keep the kingdom secure.
She has a couple weeks, maybe months, to stay alone, unwed, but she knows that it'll go by faster than she can swim.
