Visual Thinking I - Assignment 5
Our final project required us to revisit a previous piece and do something new with it. I decided to continue with the piece I had done for Assignment 4, ‘Untitled (Yarn Web)’. I wanted to further explore the concept of insidious relationships but focus this time on the effects one may feel on a smaller, more personal level. By eliminating the performance, I cause the pain and discomfort that the piece represents to be more intimate.

Visual Thinking I - Assignment 4
For this assignment, the group was asked to create a piece using nontraditional forms of art such as light, sound, performance, and assemblage. I chose to do a performance piece in which I put nails in the studio wall and tied black yarn to them, stringing the yarn between and around the objects in the room as well. The point of the piece was to bring to light to the hardships of toxic relationships. The performance began as I was setting up, and while at first glance one would think I was just setting up my piece, that deception was part of the story - sometimes a person can get into a relationship, whether it be romantic or platonic, and not realize that at some point in time they began to take on that other person’s problems, becoming mentally and even physically ill due to the stress.
