does the fact that bernadetta would rather die in her room rather than out fighting in a war mess with you like it does me... because i feel like that desire is very telling of her views on the war in the first place

there’s a increasingly satisfying difference between speaking with bernadetta and writing to her. on paper, bernadetta is a lot more eloquent and every line can have the proper amount of thought that her speech simply does not get. when writing, she can feasibly take the extra minutes, heck, even hours if she really wanted, to really think through what she wants to say and how she wants to say it. if you know bernadetta, reading a letter from her wouldn’t feel like bernadetta, but in a way it is more her than ever. it’s why she takes such a pleasure in writing, it’s nice to have the natural flow of words come so easily, it’s almost like a dream. in writing she can use the flowery language she knows but cannot properly pronounce, there is no real place for hesitation or pause. truthfully, she’s actually quite envious of some of her more well-spoken classmates. this envy extends to people in the monastary too; the archbishop is the pinnacle, but there is equal desire to possess the sort of grace flayn and seteth have. her writing is confident, it is strong and certain, the flow is uninterupted and it’s easy to tell she just... has fun writing it.

in short: while it might take some getting used to, bernadetta is an absolutely stellar penpal. her writing is also really good but that was a given, plus like, only syl gets to read it please don’t make her rope anyone else into this mess.

“ yes, it is. i miss her cooking often. ” a rare confession, the sort he usually keeps close, curdled to his chest, so contained he nearly forgets until he’s reminded in delicate moments like this. how easily his dreadful details spill when he sits across from bernadetta, viscous and rolling as waves. there is a plain comfort that settles between them. unfamiliar, but welcome.

“ she and my mother are the only family i care to think about. ” his father and half-siblings, all of his kin, so undeserving of thoughts or remembrance. he has purged them even of names. he blinks, a slow motion, pause punctuating the insinuation that follows. “ —– the rest are useless, and dead. ”

“ o-oh. um, i... i see. that’s... ”

nice ? she’s not really sure what to say in response to that. she can’t exactly relate, in fact, despite it all, she’s kind of jealous. it’s not as easy to look back fondly on things when it comes to family. there’s some things, sure, but it probably doesn’t compare to what he seems to recall. a bow of her head leads her to stare at her food for a moment. she picks at it, but her appitite seems to have been lost. were he to question, she’d claim the reason is unrelated to their conversation... definitely unrelated. she sets her silverware down and her fingers are interlaced soon after. hands are set atop the table as a noticable perk to her lips arises.

“ well i-i’m glad you... liked it. if they’re ever serving something you don’t like here, i can, uh, make this for you instead. l-like i said before... it’s actually really easy. ”

this might seem obvious but i do wanna state that all c/b convos happen pre-ts for me. if you can unlock them pre-skip, then they take place pre-skip. exact timeline placement may vary but i wanted to say it outright since you can, theoretically, unlock those later after the skip. i’m a stickler for this mainly because... bernadetta changes a lot post-skip, so it’s important to me that none of that is reverted because she wouldn’t do the same things she used to. she’s a lot healthier now, she takes better care of herself, she’s much more confident and a lot less easily startled. so on and so forth
