but worth noting wrt a point in the last post i guess.

so upfront: i write dito as homoromantic & asexual. we have it from yoko taro himself that dito’s gay and canonically his interests slant away from sex and more towards violence. if dito were to date anyone, their relationship would most likely be purely platonic and their dates would be murdering the shit out of people. 

dito was used for sex his entire sentient life. he doesn’t like it and doesn’t enjoy it. maybe it would be different with a man, but i think five soured him on any sort of physical intimacy, like, ever.

my takeaway from the games has always been that once zero had other disciples, she and dito stopped sleeping together. he offers when it’s just the two of them because she needs it and even then, zero is dismissive of the idea and seems equally as disinterested. i’ve always figured she had sex with the other three because they at least enjoyed it and he - didn’t. and frankly, zero herself knows what it’s like to be used for other people’s pleasure. she’s not going to force it on someone who really doesn’t want it and is uncomfortable with the act. 

zero and dito have the ultimate bromance.

and to that point, i take his betrayal in route b as five’s corrupted influence driving him insane through what remains of their connection as disciple and intoner rather than dito “falling in love” with her ugliness. 

dito is also an adult. at least in his own mind, he’s an adult. he has twenty-two years of false memories. i don’t feel comfortable classifying him as a minor because dito clearly doesn’t think he is and, though he’s prone to bouts of immaturity, dito also doesn’t really act like a child. he’s the youngest looking, but he’s the most mature and sensible of any of the party. 

he just looks like a teenager because five wanted a beautiful little doll to play with.

HEADCANON.

Dito did not betray the party of his own free will in Branch D.

One of the things I love most about Drakengard is the fact that though the party will not admit it, they genuinely love and care about each other. Dito finds value in the companionship the other Disciples, Mikhail and Zero offer. He is absolutely on the Murder World Tour to fuck shit up and destroy things, but he is one hundred percent in it to be with them, whatever that might mean.

Dito’s backstory has heavy themes to sexual abuse. Five used the control an Intoner has over her disciple to control him and force him to obey her every command – but she did so subconsciously, without realizing she was doing it. 

Throughout the game and his prequel novel, Dito makes it abundantly clear that he does not like Five in any way. The only thing he appreciates about her is her ugly subconscious and the fact that she refuses to acknowledge the ugly parts of her infuriates him. She abuses him without even knowing she does it and that is the part he can’t stand. And it wasn’t always this way. We see the slow progression of Five’s decline. Dito and Five travel together almost amicably through the desert in her DLC. He’s constantly muttering under his breath and making his displeasure and less than “cute” traits known, sassing her and making it clear that he isn’t just her cute little plaything, but they’re on mostly equal footing. Five seems to allow him to do this. By the time of his novella, though – Five is controlling him and forcing him to interact with her in a way she approves of. Dito is aware of her doing it and comments about how he doesn’t even have control over his facial muscles unless she allows him to. He can’t voice opinions she doesn’t like. He can’t even try to kill her. By the time Zero arrives to challenge Five, we see that the control over him has advanced to the point where he physically cannot move without her approval. He remains standing behind her with his head down, completely unmoving, until Five has him summon Phanuel for the boss fight. Even his summoning incantation is different from how he is in the rest of the game - it’s flat and devoid of any and all emotion. After her death, Dito becomes one of the most animated party members in terms of physicality and voice. He’s constantly talking, constantly making inappropriate jokes, emoting all over the place with his voice, and even his idles have a bounce to them.

In Branch D Dito begins to lose his mind as the corrupted world begins bleeding through reality. The closer they get to Five, the more frenzied and manic Dito gets. He never sounds as unhinged or wild as he does at any other point in the game. To me, it’s clear that Five’s warped state is making him act erratically, especially where the rest of the party notices and becomes concerned. It worsens the closer he gets to Five, until his mind cracks and he loses all impulse control, summoning Phanuel and sacrificing himself in a way that he just would not do in his right mind. While he isn’t channeling Five’s power when he summons the angel, he is still under her influence.

We know that Intoners can brute force their Disciples into doing what they want. We see that when Three hijacks Octa and forces him to summon Armisael. 

When Five is dead Dito regains control of himself but the damage is already done. He’s spent all his power and reverts to a dove.

as a gentle warning for those not familiar with DOD3, dito’s backstory contains themes of abuse, rape, loss of autonomy, and more. if you consider his physical appearance then you can probably throw pedophilia in there too.  the ages of the disciples are difficult to peg, but dito canonically believes himself to be twenty-two (at least in the NA release), physically appears to be about his early to mid teens, and is chronologically two. 

as for shipping - jesus christ, that’s a loaded subject.  it’s super unlikely to happen. i won’t be shipping him with anyone under the age of 18 because mentally he’s a young adult, and won’t be writing any nsfw content because of his physical appearance.  

that’s the cleanest way i can handle that. 

as much as i will try to navigate these carefully, troubling themes will be present on this blog due to the nature of the canon and the character himself.

During a quick respite from their journey the young dragon had sought out entertainment while Zero was busy with… whatever. Even though he’s been clearly warned not to splash about, she didn’t exactly say he couldn’t do that in something more clean, right?

With a swift motion the young dragon had dived into the pool of water, drawing the pits content into the air from the sheer impact of his weight and landing on the unfortunate nearby Disciple, drowning him for a moment in cold water before leaving him soaked. Mikhail, however, had yet to notice this.

Wahahahaha! That feels great!

Oh no, oh no, oh no. Dito barely has a chance to register that the big dumb baby had left the spot he’d been napping in and bolted for the water before he’s in there, and the splash has hit. He’s drenched from head to toe, certain that a frog has the audacity to wiggle itself into his pocket.

“Hey, you big idiot! What do you think you’re doing! And what did Z say about making a mess?!”

he’s a pretty terrible bird child but he’s gone through a lot and just wants his family to murder people with him.

dito basically only hates two kinds of people outright: the self-righteous sort who justify everything they do with ‘blah blah blah heroism / justice / love for mankind’ and basically anyone that tries to fuck with him. for the most part he’s fine with living and let live, he just. kinda likes dead things and gore and to be allowed to be himself. 

he talks way more than he actually takes action. he threatens to murder cent all the time but never lifts a finger against him - when push comes to shove, he even invites cent to join him. dito kind of just says shit for the sake of saying it since he’s spent so long not being able to express himself.

Cloud didn’t know how to approach kids on a good day- even Marlene. Denzel had been the one to open his heart. But he didn’t know this young man, and the feelings of awkward as well as being on high alert were rising rapidly.

He can’t fault self-defense. And even if it wasn’t - this kid… was he alone?

It wouldn’t be a lie to say they were. Dito doesn’t go out of his way to start fights. It’s not his style, he’s too small to take on an army and too smart to even try. But he’d made his fair share of enemies over the years, and ShinRA being dead didn’t mean grudges went away easy.

Especially not when you stabbed your commander on your way out of that sinking ship and left a squad stranded.
