‼️To my mutuals/followers collecting disability/SSI/retirement benefits from the Social Security Administration:‼️

Keep a careful eye on your monthly payments going forward. Starting today, SSA is implementing a policy that they will withhold 100% of a beneficiary's monthly benefit to recoup overpayments. So if you notice that you are receiving more than you usually do, call SSA immediately (1-800-772-1213) and ask that they check their calculations. Because otherwise, you will be paying for their mistakes. This does not apply to any overpayments before today, so if you are already on a payment plan with them to recoup an overpayment, the amount they will withhold from your monthly payment won’t change.

Please make your friends and loved ones aware of this change!! I’ve been working at a law firm that specializes in SSD/SSI for 5 years now, and even before DOGE stuck their nasty little claws into SSA, overpayments were a huge issue. They sometimes go unnoticed for years, and then you’ll suddenly get a letter from SSA stating that they overpaid you tens of thousands of dollars over those years and now they want that money back. I reiterate- they can now withhold your entire monthly payment until the overpayment is fully recouped. Read every single statement you receive from SSA carefully and promptly report any change in your income/assets to SSA (including that of your spouse if you are on SSI) to avoid financial stress and pain in the future.
