How important is technology to your company's success?
The answer: very important. According to one survey [1], a company's use of the latest technology improved customer experience and satisfaction. Motorola Solutions, Inc. recently published a portion of their annual Holiday Shopping Survey and found that retail experience was better for both employees and customers when the employees used the latest technology.
Below is a small infographic with some of the facts from this survey:
Technology, customer satisfaction and the SaaS industry
The information above applies to retail stores, but there were similar findings with vWorkApp, a SaaS and job dispatch software.
Square Meals, a vWorkApp customer, found that her company had increased customer satisfaction when her company implemented vWorkApp's job dispatch technology [2].
Square Meals, a meal delivery service in San Francisco, implemented vWorkApp's dispatching technology to help her company deliver meals to San Francisco residents.
One of the benefits of using vWorkApp was the 99% improved efficiency in responding to Square Meals' customers' questions. For example, a customer would call Square Meals to ask for a location of an item, and Square Meals could report an exact location and approximate time of arrival. Square Meals customers were impressed by this and as a result viewed Square Meals as a highly professional business.
Click on the image above to read more about how vWorkApp's technology helped Square Meals.
Make customer satisfaction one of your competitive advantages
One way to establish a competitive advantage is through customer satisfaction. For example, one reason that Apple is doing so well is because their customers are very satisfied with Apple products. Read an example of this here. Below is an image from the aforementioned article that displays peoples' satisfaction with different personal computers. Apple ranks number one.
And customer satisfaction could lead to a lifetime of his or her business. The following information can be found in a Starbucks case study showing the value of a lifelong customer:
In conclusion
High customer satisfaction could lead to a lifetime of a customer's business, as seen by the Starbucks case study. High customer satisfaction can help to make your business one of the best in the industry, such as Apple in the PC industry.
One way to increase customer satisfaction is through the adoption of the latest technology. Thus, technology is very important to your company's success.

For those of you who are Team Android...
For the people on Team Android, there's now the lovely new Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
It costs $299.99 with a new contract with Verizon Wireless. Otherwise it's $649.99. According to the Samsung website, it is the "world's first phone with a 4.65" high-definition Super AMOLED display." It's also the first phone to run on Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.
More cool stuff
Other cool features include that you can unlock the phone by smiling at it (charming!) and it has 150 hours of battery life—on standby—which is equivalent to 6.25 days.
The phone has a 5.0MP camera (not quite as good as the iPhone 4S 8MP camera), and 32GB of memory. And of course there are thousands and thousands of apps available for download in the Android app store.
Productivity and vWorkApp
5 benefits with web based dispatch software and the cloud
I once wrote this beautiful paper for an Economics class. I wrote it using Microsoft Word and I saved the document frequently, because Dad always warned me about crashing programs and dying computers. Then my computer died. Of course.
Luckily I had a partner for this project, and I had recently emailed him a version of our paper! This email stored our paper in "The Cloud." The cloud saved me from spending many hours rewriting this paper.
Cloud computing is as beneficial to businesses as it is to students with flakey old computers.* This includes businesses involved with job dispatching. Below are notes that emphasize the benefits of the cloud and web based dispatch software like vWorkApp.
1. Access files from any web-enabled device
A dispatcher might sit at a desk, in front of a computer, and dispatch jobs. This dispatcher might job sheets, sticky notes and a phone to dispatch jobs. He might print out job sheets or write schedules every morning, then he might spend hours sorting paperwork at night.
While this method of job dispatch does work, it's not the most efficient way to dispatch. It's a bit like printing new versions of my Economics paper, then retyping each new version instead of just saving my paper in an email (or the computer, if it's reliable...)
Web based dispatching software allows a dispatcher to quickly update schedules from any web-enabled computer. He isn't shackled to his desk, rewriting and printing new schedules for his mobile workers.
2. Automatically back up your data
Information within vWorkApp is stored in the cloud. This could include customer data, such as business locations and billing addresses. It could also include employee data, such as who the employee's customers are and when your employee last visited this customer.**
This is invaluable data when it comes to analyzing and streamlining business operations over any period of time. And keeping this data in the cloud means you won't lose it. So when you need to do your taxes, you have months or years of data in one safe location.
In addition, the data back up is automatic. You don't need to create folders—virtual or physical—to hold this information.
3. No extra installations or software updates
One holdup for companies that are considering using software instead of pen-and-paper or cell phones is the expensive hardware that's often involved. With a dispatching software that uses the cloud (such as vWorkApp), there is no hardware (except smartphones). And this web based software is updated and reviewed frequently by a team of engineers and programmers.
4. Data is easy to analyze and share
Since data is kept in the cloud, it's easy to consolidate. If you need to run reports to analyze business operations, simply export data to Excel. Perhaps you need to put a bunch of data into an external accounting system like QuickBooks? This is easy with vWorkApp, and it means dispatchers don't need to spend hours manually typing data into accounting software.
5. Dispatching operations are scalable
The more dispatched employees you have, the harder it is to dispatch without software. Printing schedules for two dispatched workers is a lot easier than printing schedules for twenty workers.
A web based dispatching software like vWorkApp has information stored in virtual servers in the cloud. This makes it easy to add extra workers or update information anywhere in your job dispatch operations.
For example, a company could use some proprietary software on their own servers (versus virtual servers) for job dispatching. This proprietary software and the servers might not easily accept changes or additional software or information. Virtual servers (in the cloud) are highly adaptable.

The small WOWee vs. the HUGE iNuke
The Mobile Excellence Awards took place in Los Angeles on December 5th. The award for the Best Mobile Product in 2011 was the WOWee ONE Slim.
WTF is the WOWee ONE Slim?
It's a compact, portable speaker made by WOWee ONE. It weighs a whopping 120 grams (0.26 lbs). According to the company site, the WOWee ONE Slim "produces an incredible bass sound with a 40Hz - 20kHz sound range." It's small enough to fit in your pocket and costs about $117 on Sears.com.
By contrast, there's the iNuke Boom...
This bad boy is 700 lbs of speaker. It costs $30,000 and blasts 10,000 watts of power—The WOWee ONE Slim only produces two watts of power. It's also eight feet long by four feet high. Here's a picture of the iNuke Boom:
And here's a diagram so you can compare the sizes of these two speakers with a six-foot-tall person:

4 free apps to make work a bit more fun
Click the icons above to see each app on itunes.apple.com
Ever feel like Peter Gibbons from Office Space? You know, where he's stuck in traffic, or asked to come into the office to work on Saturday, or constantly checking the time? Once in awhile we probably all feel the way Peter Gibbons does about work.
To prevent yourself from taking baseball bats to office equipment, try these 4 apps while you're at work. Work just might become a bit more enjoyable!
1. Pandora
The first app that I would recommend is Pandora. Music is essential in my work day because it keeps me focused. Download the free Pandora app on your iPhone or Android phone. It should be easy to find in each app store because it's one of the most popular apps available. Below is a screenshot of the Pandora app for the iPhone:
2. Mind Tools
Pandora is the only one of these four apps that I've actually ever tried. I've only read about the other apps, including this one. Mind Tools will supposedly teach you over 100 management, productivity, communication, leadership and other business-related skills. Below is a screenshot of this app for the iPhone:
3. Lemon
The little things in life are what make us happy, like that small cup of coffee in the morning or that favorite TV show on Thursday nights. Lemon is a way to bring just a small amount of happiness into... job receipts! Lemon scans your paper receipts and makes them taggable and searchable. Use this at work to keep track of work expenses easily. However, I recommend backing everything up in the Cloud with this app. There were a few comments on iTunes saying that this app didn't work properly.
4. ScoreMobile
I'll admit, I know absolutely nothing about fantasy sports, except that some of my friends absolutely love it. You can use ScoreMobile to check fantasy sports scores during your work breaks. With this app I did see a few complaints in iTunes about advertisements. But this is a free app! Ads might be unavoidable here.
6.8% of web browsing came from a non-computer
According to The rise of digital omnivores, 6.8% of internet traffic within the United States in August 2011 came from a non-computer device. A non-computer device might include a smartphone, tablet or other internet-accessible devices.
Smartphones accounted for most of the mobile web surfing data. Tablets came in after that. In the U.S. nearly 2% of non-computer web surfing came from tablets. And most of that 2% was with an iPad.
5+ facts about the taxi industry today
1. The taxi industry is a tough industry.
Taxis work in a tough industry. A typical taxi driver's salary is only about $31,590 [1]. There are a limited number of medallions, which are necessary to legally run a taxi company, within many cities. This leads to many economic inefficiencies. For example, people wait years in line for the chance to buy a taxi medallion.
Because the supply of medallions is limited, the cost of medallions is artificially high. A medallion can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. In fact, two recently sold in New York City for $1 million each [2].
2. Being a taxi driver is bad for physical and emotional health.
I briefly mentioned in this article that the long, sedentary hours that taxi drivers face is bad for their health. A recent article in Scientific American reported that sitting for long hours increases the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality.
The long hours of driving are also bad for one's emotional health. Road rage is a huge emotional drain and a very common occurrence (cite).
3. Being a taxi driver is very dangerous.
As a taxi driver, you are at least 20 times more likely than other workers to be murdered on the job [3]. Taxi drivers deal with many risks every day. They risk being involved in car accidents every day. They are also at risk of being robbed, chauffeuring people under the influence of alcohol, and driving in dangerous areas of town. Taxi drivers must also always be aware of the bicyclists and pedestrians sharing the road, adding to the danger of harming someone else.
4. Taxi driver employment is expected to grow faster than average.
According to bls.gov's Taxi drivers and chauffeurs page, taxi driver job opportunities should grow relatively quickly. This could be due to high employee (i.e. taxi driver) turnover or the increase in laws requiring that taxis have services for disabled people. Also, there are very few opportunities for advancement within a taxi company.
5. The top 10 U.S. cities in which people take taxis to work are: [4]
1. Bethel, AK (housing, pop. 5,471): 12.6%
2. Manhattan, NY (housing, pop. 1,537,195): 4.7%
3. Newburgh, NY (housing, pop. 28,259): 4.1%
4. Spring Valley, NY (housing, pop. 25,464): 3.8%
5. Asbury Park, NJ (housing, pop. 16,930): 3.8%
6. Monticello, NY (housing, pop. 6,512): 3.7%
7. Port Chester, NY (housing, pop. 27,867): 3.5%
8. LaGrange, GA (housing, pop. 25,998): 3.1%
9. Haverstraw, NY (housing, pop. 10,117): 3.0%
10. Lawrence, MA (housing, pop. 72,043): 3.0%

Version 3.25 of vWorkApp
The Map view in the vWorkApp dashboard.
While the American vWorkApp team feasted on Thanksgiving turkey, the New Zealand vWorkApp team toiled in the office to update vWorkApp's software. The result is version 3.25 of vWorkApp. Now, with version 3.25 of vWorkApp, you can turn worker labels on and off in the Map view (see the image above), and you can see flyouts for multiple workers when clustered in a single location. Also, the trial period was extended, and now you cannot duplicate a name with a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters.
Worker labels in the Map view
Now it's easier to locate workers in the Map view because workers have named labels. For example, see the image above and/or to the right. Both Sarah and Michele are in the same location. Before there weren't labels, so you would simply see that someone was there. Now names appear in these labels making it easier to find exactly who is in each location. This is especially good when more than one worker ends up at the same place.
Turn labels on or off
If you don't like seeing these named labels in the Map view, just uncheck the box next to 'Show Worker Labels.' On that same note, check this box if you do want to see worker's names.
Extended trial period
Normally the trial period for vWorkApp is 14 days. We've realized that this doesn't give people an adequate amount of time to trial vWorkApp. We've extended the trial period to 30 days to allow people more time to play around with vWorkApp.
Worker's names cannot be duplicated regarding letter case
Before version 3.25 of vWorkApp, a worker was considered a different person if the letters in his/her name had a different case. For example, 'Sarah' (uppercase S) and 'sarah' (lowercase S) would have been considered two different workers. Now vWorkApp recognizes that 'Sarah' and 'sarah' are the same worker.
Sweating the details
Version 3.24 of vWorkApp for Android mobile devices has been released. The Job section of the application has newly-designed tabs. Also, vWorkApp now integrates with Square on Android devices.
Tabs
Below is a screenshot of the newly-designed tabs:
Integration with Square
Now you can pay with Square + vWorkApp on your Android. Square is the popular credit card reader for phones and iPads. You must have the free Square app installed on your Android phone to also use it in vWorkApp. To install Square on your phone, simply go to the Android App Market and search "Square," then install.
Paying with Square in vWorkApp is easy. Use Square by pressing the button that says Pay With Square. See below:
Below are more screenshots demonstrating the Square integration with vWorkApp. If you choose to pay using Square then you will seen the image below (left). Enter the amount due ($25.95 in the example shown below):
Enter the credit card number or choose Cash if the customer is paying with cash. Then you can choose to send a copy of the receipt with an email or an SMS. Or skip sending a receipt altogether.
The dangers and challenges facing bicycle couriers
Being a bicycle courier is tough. Bicycle couriers face dangerous situations daily. Courier jobs are declining as a result of improving technology and a weak economy. On top of this, bicycle couriers receive very low pay. However, bicycle couriers are necessary for the safe and fast delivery of important items. But for now, couriers are still necessary, and they will continue to face the following dangers and challenges.
The dangers that bicycle couriers face
Bicycle couriers must navigate the hazardous obstacles of cities every day. These obstacles include cars, other bicyclists, debris, pedestrians, dogs, bad weather, and railroad tracks. Pollution is a recent, additional health hazard that couriers encounter every day.
One might think that the most dangerous thing that bicycle couriers face is a mix-up with a car. According to one article [1], collisions between vehicles and bikes are not more dangerous than other bike-related collisions. Here is one of the graphs found within the article:
This says that, according to one study, you're more likely to end up with a 'serious injury' if the collision is a 'car-bike collision' or a 'bike-dog collision.' However, the largest number of serious injuries in this study was a result of 'falling.'
Cyclists are also exposed to pollutants, like car exhaust, when biking in heavy traffic. In one Scientific American article [2] scientists from Health Canada, Environment Canada and the University of Ottawa wrote in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal that their "findings suggest that short-term exposure to traffic may have a significant impact on cardiac autonomic function in healthy adults."
But the article then goes on to say that the benefits of cycling outweigh the dangers from breathing exhaust. Biking in areas with fewer cars would reduce the amount of pollution exposed to cyclists.
Challenges facing the bicycle courier industry
One of the greatest challenges to this industry is technology [3]. It's much easier to scan and email documents today than it was a few years ago. It's also faster and less expensive than using a courier service.
Another challenge in the industry is the low wages paid to couriers. I had mentioned in this article that the median hourly wage for couriers in the U.S. in May of 2008 was only $11.22.
The following statistics were taken from the SF Examiner [3]:
20-25 runs: Typical number of runs a bike messenger takes each day
5 minutes: Average length of trip in downtown corridor
400 couriers: Estimated number of bike couriers in San Francisco during the dot-com boom
150-200 couriers: Estimated number of bike couriers currently in San Francisco
$20,00-35,000: Estimated salary range for current bike couriers
$40,000-105,000: Estimated salary range for bike couriers during dot-com boom
A solution
One way to help reduce the strain and challenges in bicycle courier companies is to use vWorkApp dispatch software. vWorkApp is designed to be extremely user-friendly and easy to implement (see our recent case study, which focuses on these benefits). It's different from other dispatch software because of its ease-of-use, excellent user interface, and ease-of-implementation.
How would vWorkApp help bicycle courier companies? vWorkApp would allow courier companies to dispatch jobs to the nearest available bicycle couriers with a simple drag-and-drop function. Dispatchers could then track the progress of couriers via GPS and in real-time. This allows dispatchers to be sure that couriers are on the correct and most efficient route. Dispatchers can also be sure that couriers reach destinations in a timely manner.
Dispatchers can keep records of courier and customer activity to analyze and improve the company's dispatching. These records will store signatures, photos, customer data, courier information, routes, and more.
This increased efficiency and organization will help the courier company to spend their time focusing on their courier services and not on their dispatching efforts. This is especially important in this slow economy and shrinking industry.
Summary
Working in the bicycle courier industry is dangerous and challenging. Bicycle couriers could become seriously injured on the job and often don't make enough to pay for health insurance. The industry is shrinking due to improvements in technology (especially email). However, there is still a niche for the bicycle courier.
vWorkApp can help bicycle courier companies to improve and organize their dispatching efforts with its job dispatching software. Unfortunately, vWorkApp can't help to reduce the number of dangerous hazards bicycle couriers face. Unless bicycle couriers start using their smartphones as helmets... or giant force fields.
There's probably another app for that.

Goodbye! beloved! Yahoo! sign!
Information in this image is from techcrunch.com.
Sad. This sign was always so pretty to see on my San Francisco commutes. I wonder why it's coming down... vWorkApp could replace it with an awesome image...
Gorgeous!
vWorkApp's new job receipts
The new look of the vWorkApp job receipts.
We all know that receipts are important. If you want to return a pair of shoes or if you want warranty validation for your car, you need a receipt.
vWorkApp's job receipts
Job receipts in vWorkApp are also extremely important. They prove that you completed a job. They show the steps that were taken in a job, the job route on a map, the important notes and signatures. Why is this important? You can prove that a job was done. Your company can calculate business taxes, reconciliations and budgets. They will come in handy for legal matters too, if those should arise.
In addition, these receipts are digital. Personally, I despise keeping receipts. They are just annoying pieces of paper! I usually throw them away immediately. But digital versions are easy to keep and to find later (like right before the tax season).
Why are pretty receipts important?
The vWorkApp receipts are pretty. Why does that matter? Finding the information you need about a job is easier when the receipts are pretty and organized. You don't have to read through text to find a job route. There's a picture from Google Maps right there in the job receipt!
Upgrading vWorkApp is easy!
Upgrading your vWorkApp account is now super easy. If you're currently using a free or lite version of vWorkApp and you want to upgrade to the full version, then follow these directions:
1. Log into your vWorkApp account.
2. Click the tab at the top that says "Admin."
3. Click the tab that says "Account."
4. If you need to, adjust the number of workers you want on the upgraded/professional plan.
5. Click the green button that says "Upgrade."
Then follow the additional directions on the screen!
