Throwing a board of soda mugs. While these are simple shapes, the bodies have a very slight, subtle curve. The subtleties of pots are often those small features that really define them, such as the beveled rim, the slight belly on the form and the undercut towards the base. I remember my first few batches of these being bottom heavy, instead of the curve coming to an apex at the middle, they bulged at the base – making them appear bottom heavy. It really did take me sometime before I was comfortable throwing the form to a certain standard while maintaining a good pace. I used to find I was almost running out of clay as I got to the tops, meaning they looked thin and measly. One aspect that really changed how I worked was keeping the rim strength and look consistent. These rims aren’t thin, they’re quite chunky in reality, it forced me to start throwing very evenly as not only the walls had to be thick, but the rim did too. They may look thinner than they really are, the top edges are just beveled to create a comfortable drinking lip. I’ve always used a pointer to throw with, seen here as the wooden contraption on the left. The black rubber point can be flung backward as it appears now so not to interfere when picking the pots off from the wheel, or when centring small lumps of clay. It’s a tool I can’t work without, for repetition throwing it gives me a point in space to aim for when pulling the walls of clay upward, it also prevents overthrowing. In most cases, during the midst of a throwing session, it’s almost only used as a reference point. I drop the pointer to see how much further I need to go and after a long throwing session of espresso cups, creamers or mugs I find I barely use it until the pots practically finished. On the right on the wheel-tray is my current favourite rib, a big brass one with two holes punched through.
