Happy Waiakea Wednesday! Todays ʻŌlelo of the Day or Hawaiian word of the day is mo’o. The mo'o is an ancient mythological being which appears in legends throughout Polynesia. For the Polynesians, geckos were perfect mirror images of this dragon-like monster. We all know that Hawai’i was formed by volcanic eruptions, but a new study shows that Hawai’i’s islands were formed by a different kind of eruption than previously thought. Instead of internal emplacement of magma (where the magma solidifies in the rock before it reaches the surface), the islands were actually formed by extrusion eruptions of lava on the volcanoes’ surface.
