Discussion questions:
What were your overall feelings about chapters 19 & 20? Were they what you expected? Did you enjoy them? If this was a repeat playthrough for you, did you feel differently about them this time around?
In Chapter 19, MC comes face to face with their sister and is forced to relieve one of the worst days of their life. How did your MC cope - what choices did they make (screenshots will be posted later if you need to refresh your memory), and how do you think they will go forward in the aftermath of the solstice and losing their sister again?
If you did not kill Dirk after the coup attempt, he died saving MC here. What symbolism (if any) do you see in how he met his death, and why do you think he chose to save MC?
Did you select the final scenes with each of the 5 LIs? If so, which were platonic and which were not? How did you feel about each scene? Were you satisfied with the ending with your LI and/ or friends? In your mind, what does the future look like for them.
Did you get the bonus scene? If so, share your thoughts.
Again, I know this didn't quite go as smoothly as I had hoped, and we were a thinly little group, but it was still a pleasure to read with each of you.
I hope you will all do some creating for WTD, and if you do, please be sure to tag me! Thanks for reading along!
I'm answering so I don't forget! lol Especially since I'm jumping in to join @choicesbookclub's reading of Veil of Secrets with starts today. I hope some of you will join along!
1... What were your overall feelings about chapters 19 & 20? Were they what you expected? Did you enjoy them? If this was a repeat playthrough for you, did you feel differently about them this time around?
I have played through several times already, and there really was nothing like the first time—when you just don't know what will happen. Subsequent playthroughs (including this one) were not as exciting for me as I knew what would happen. I found myself just "clicking through," but that shouldn't take away from how exciting it was the first time I played. I tried to really take it in this time around, and it was more enjoyable than other playthroughs.
I remember the first time I played, I just thought MC had the most incredible fortitude, and I thought back to the conversation that Ana (her sister) had with Dirk (diamond scene) earlier in the book. Zoe (MC) was born to lead. Ana knew it, even if others didn't, and while she may not have given herself credit for it, Ana helped instill that in her. In this chapter, that really shone through. Not only did they have to lead the colony against the zombie surge and face imminent death, but they were forced to endure emotional torture by seeing their sister as a zombie queen, watching her kill Dirk, fearing they could kill her (I don't care how cool they played it, they knew that was a possibility), getting that precious time with them again - only to have to watch her die once more. I mean, that's just lay in the fetal position and give up on life stuff right there; but MC just keeps going.
I can say that it profoundly impacted my MC, and it's a trauma that she will carry with her until her dying day. She will bury it, for the most part. Precious few will know how deeply this impacted her, but it will always be there. Like everyone in this work, she does not get time to heal - especially as Olympus's leader - she will be forced to push this aside and carry on, but the damage is done and it will come out in various ways in the future (maybe I'll even write about it eventually lol).
3... If you did not kill Dirk after the coup attempt, he died saving MC here. What symbolism (if any) do you see in how he met his death, and why do you think he chose to save MC?
I never killed Dirk, so in every playthrough, I had this scene. I'm curious to see what it would be like if he had already been murdered (any screenshots?). This was very poignant and it always made me glad I made the choice to spare him. His shock at seeing Ana alone was worth it - someday, I would really like to explore how he coped with that (as brief as it was) through writing.
I think seeing Ana again reminded him of who he was; it brought back his humanity, and it was probably the most guilty he had felt about betraying Zoe. I don't think he wanted to die, but I think he was willing to die for Zoe at this point because he knew how wrong he was - and if Ana came to and knew what he had done - she may have still ended him the way she did in zombie state. lol
4... Did you select the final scenes with each of the 5 LIs? If so, which were platonic and which were not? How did you feel about each scene? Were you satisfied with the ending with your LI and/ or friends? In your mind, what does the future look like for them?
I loved these scenes. Like most things Choices, they were a little superficial, short, and rushed - but that's what allows creators to sink their teeth into them (pun intended!) I did all the scenes, in general, only Eli's is romantic, the rest platonic, but I did the romantic scene for both Eli and Troy in this one. I'll share screenshots with feelings on this tomorrow, but I will say, as with most things in the book, I found the scenes with Eli "deepest."
5... Did you get the bonus scene? If so, share your thoughts.
I did. While it wasn't bad, and I appreciated the tiny bit of insight it gave us into MC & their sister's past experiences, it didn't rock my world. It's clear to see where the "Zombie Queen" came from now, though it doesn't really make sense as to why. It wasn't bad, but it could have been better.
Overall, I loved WTD, and I'm grateful to it because after I realized how much I liked this, I watched The Last of Us, and dear God, that was a masterpiece. (Sadly, I won't watch the latter again for personal reasons, but I'm still glad I did.)
I do wish the choices we made would have had more consequences, especially in a story like this. I honestly think this is one book where the survival of each and every LI (or even the MC) should not necessarily by a given. Of course, the Choices community probably couldn't handle that. I'm sure they would have whined, petitioned and thrown fits if that had occurred. I think other actions like that in the past have helped foster some of the milquetoast storytelling we get in contemporary Choices books - though - there are a lot of other reasons for that as well.
Still, I loved WTD, and if not for Pixelberry's penchant for really fucking up sequels, I would have loved to have had one for this.

1.. So... how is your MC going to cope with the big news that their sister is now a zombie queen? Do you think PB did their reaction justice? Why, or why not?
2.. Did you take the diamond scene with the storytelling? If so, your thoughts.

1. So... how is your MC going to cope with the big news that their sister is now a zombie queen? Do you think PB did their reaction justice? Why, or why not?
Well, my MC is devastated...
... and blames herself!
Now about crushing some cars to vent? 😂😂😂 That reaction was the worst thing possible PB could think of!
2. Did you take the diamond scene with the storytelling? If so, your thoughts.
I didn't take the story telling scene. Actually, it was a kind of "fast forward" chapter for me. The solstice is near, lets get to the good stuff!
3. If this is your first playthrough, did you see the end coming? If it is your second playthrough, what were your thoughts (Dirk) when you played the first time.
By saying "good stuff" previously, I didn't mean THIS! 😬
The 💎 scene is touching, provides some much needed comfort for the MC and thought that they would finally find some common ground! Dirk and MC never really see eye to eye. Surely he acted like a prick throughout the whole book but wasn't expecting to doublecross like that! My MC's reactions to his outbursts were always calm and collected, though I don't think makes any difference in the outcome!

1... Did you realize how deep Dirk's deception went, or was it a surprise to you? After MC is safe, did you choose to execute him and his collaborators, or did you show them mercy? Why?
2... Did you choose to punch Dirk or Blackstock? Why?
3... Blackstock once saved MC and their sister, and their argument is that they sacrificed the few for the benefit of the many. Do you believe in this philosophy? What are your feelings about Blackstock?
4... One scene that always struck me as odd was the children making the flowerbeds. What are your thoughts about this? Was it a wise thing to do?
5... The bonus scenes... who did you take them with, and did you take the platonic or dirty 30 routes? 😉 What were your thoughts about any of them.
6... The solstice is tomorrow... how ready is your colony?
Thank you all so much for your patience with me! The past month has brought flu, work issues, a bout of depression, multiple family events culminating in huge ass wedding on Thursday... so your girl has been not herself! lol But, all is settled and I'm feeling much better now. I'm going to get the other 2 chapters up this week so we can close this out. THANK YOU for your kindness!
Did you realize how deep Dirk's deception went, or was it a surprise to you? After MC is safe, did you choose to execute him and his collaborators, or did you show them mercy? Why?
Look, I knew Dirk was a dick - I mean - change one letter, and it's right there! But on my initial read, I had no idea he worked with Blackstock, and for that, I wanted to flatten him! lol Still, I chose not to execute him. It was a hard choice, but my decisions were based on the following: 1) They would need more fighters for the solstice - hell - they could even shove them in the path of the zombies to save themselves, lol 2) I felt like Zoe wouldn't want to kill Anna's best friend, especially since she just learned that Anna is alive and a zombie. Dirk may be too much of a dick to respect Anna's memory/wishes (and Anna probably would have killed him herself), but Zoe has more character than him, 3) That was not the kind of colony Zoe wanted to establish. Yes, there have to be rules and consequences, but she wouldn't want a place based on fear and violence - she could have had that at The Tower. She doesn't agree with the Raider's way of life fully, nor does she agree with the Sunflower's way. There is a middle path, and that's what she wants to establish for their new home. In my mind, if the traitors survived the solstice, there would be consequences for their actions, but they wouldn't be murdered.
Did you choose to punch Dirk or Blackstock? Why?
I had Zoe punch Blackstock. She hates them both, but Dirk is a weak little selfish man. He isn't pure evil, but Blackstock is. Further, Blackstock's actions are what ultimately led to Anna's death. So, fuck Blackstock. lol
Blackstock once saved MC and their sister, and their argument is that they sacrificed the few for the benefit of the many. Do you believe in this philosophy? What are your feelings about Blackstock?
*sigh* I'm a former Poli Sci major, I understand domestic/international politics better than the average person, and I'm aware that being a leader means making unpopular decisions, sometimes having to go against your own values, and, your choices could lead to the loss of life, even when that's not what you want. I get it. So, unfortunately, sometimes leaders have to make choices that sacrifice the few to save the many - I'm sure Zoe will face that herself. But Blackstock was different.
He wasn't making a choice to say, "This move will kill 10% of our population, but save 90%." he was executing his rivals and anyone who dared to speak, even in the most minimal way against him. He sacrificed dissenters, those who dared to question, those who were different - and he didn't appear to have an ounce of remorse about it.
Being a leader is hard, and as I always say, there are no good guys in politics, but that doesn't mean that they're all alike. Trust me, I know this in real life, and I apply it here. Blackstock is not acting out of benevolence but to retain power and control. I'd never back that way of thinking, and neither would Zoe.
One scene that always struck me as odd was the children making the flowerbeds. What are your thoughts about this? Was it a wise thing to do?
OK, the first time I read it, I thought this was SO dumb. In a way, I still do. But I can see SLIGHT logic to it. The kids were probably petrified, and this was a distraction. It reminds me of stories of mothers in real life who do all they can to shield their children from the truth when a brutal end is imminent. With that said... planting flower beds? That's a lot of work, effort, and resources. I would have thought have the children in a safe room inside Olympus with some arts & crafts and storytime. lol
The bonus scenes... who did you take them with, and did you take the platonic or dirty 30 routes? 😉 What were your thoughts about any of them.
OK, we need to sit back and take a few moments to discuss here. lol, I took all playthroughs; in the past, they were all platonic, save Eli, who was... not. lol. In this playthrough, I went non-platonic with Troy as well, since I'm working on an Eli x Zoe x Troy AU.
The platonic route for Angel is quite sweet; it shows her vulnerable side. She's all badass and bravado, but deep down, she's just this broken little girl. (That's prob one reason I never saw her as an LI, she seemed too young, too immature for Zoe.) I think Zoe sees her as a little sister, and watching them interact in this scene was nice.
Shannon's was also very sweet and showed the bond the women share. I think Shannon could have been a quality LI, but for Zoe, she was just too fearful... IDK, I didn't see it as a love match, but they are definitely tight friends.
The Troy route. OK, I'll post screenshots at some point to elaborate, and you know, the scene was great. It showed a side of Troy we don't often get to see, and I liked that, especially since it's a side I think he reserves only for those closest to him, and of course, Zoe tops that list. The dirty thirty was well done (just like Zoe and Troy - sorry - had to lol), but....
The Eli scene was, IMO, THE scene. When I read it the first time, it honestly took my breath away, and it's still one of my all-time favorite Choices scenes. Perfect? No. It's Choices. lol And yep, I'm gonna write my own version, but damn, it was good. As with Troy, we get to see "Zoe's Eli", not everyone has access to that very guarded part of him - even Zoe hasn't fully gotten through at this point in the story, but she's made it further than anyone else ever has. They support one another. He wants her to talk about Anna, and warns her to try to avoid what happened with him and his family - even though they both know there is no way to guarantee that. They know the end for one or both could be imminent and the tenderness and passion that spur from that would have taken much longer (because of Eli) if not for the solstice. The feeling of, "this may be it - this may be our forever" is evident and god, I love that shit. The dirty 30 itself... damn... I was impressed. Screenshots to come (like Eli & Zoe, sorry, had to! lol)
The solstice is tomorrow... how ready is your colony?
I don't have the tally screenshot handy, but we're in pretty good shape, all things considered. Bring it Z-bag bastards!

How is your MC going to cope with the big news that their sister is now a zombie queen? Do you think PB did their reactions justice?
On my first read, I was really shocked, and that's impressive because I usually find PB stories very predictable. But in this case, I was like, "WHOA!" This had to gut Zoe. Her sister being alive would be her greatest wish but as a zombie? I immediately thought of Eli's family and how he had to "kill" them and wondered if poor Zoe would have to do the same with Anna.
While I have Zoe taking the "I'm a leader, people are relying on me, I have to be strong" approach, this is breaking her inside, and I will definitely write more about this because I don't think PB did it justice. I especially hated the "Why don't you go bang up some cars to feel better?" BRUH. That's what you do when your boss pisses you off. That's what you do when you find out your significant other/best friend lied to you. That's what you do when your period arrives unexpectedly on a big day. That is NOT what you do when you find out the sister you love is now amongst the undead. NOPE. PB fail. lol
Did you take the diamond scene with the storytelling? What are your thoughts?
I did because I thought it would be beneficial to me in the story - but honestly - I found it to be annoying and a waste of time. It seemed to slow down the pace of the story.
If this is your first playthrough, did you see the end coming? If it is your second playthrough, what were your thoughts (Dirk) when you played the first time?
I suspected that Dirk would do something rotten, but not necessarily what he did. I thought maybe, just maybe, his loyalty to Anna would have stopped him. But nope.

It is such a bittersweet discovery for MC! Happy to be reunited ... but she is a drone!? MC would be devastated!!! PB, once again, rushed through the ending. The emotions MC would have ... would consume her!
2.. Did you take the diamond scene with the storytelling? If so, your thoughts.
Yes. It was an important piece of the journey. MC re lived good memories. Memories that highlight better days, their bond and sisterly love. Memories that reminded her of how much has changed. It motivated her to have compassion and motivation to try to save her ... giving her hope.
3.. If this is your first playthrough, did you see the end coming? If it is your second playthrough, what were your thoughts (Dirk) when you played the first time.
Yes, the end was evident ... There was no going back now because so much has been uncovered. It was now a matter of 1) who survived the solstice & 2) how to move forward in their new reality and rebuild,

Hey, y'all, I feel so bad because I have not been keeping up with our schedule. I have had so much going on since I started this - most of it not great - and it's left me so drained. I promise, we're going to finish (and I'll get the next chapter up tomorrow), but I'm going to be a little slower than intended. I'm really sorry. :(
This is all so sad. The way this will impact Zoe mentally is so far-reaching. And the idea that "smashing up some cars" will make it all better is the epitome of Pixelberry's stupidity on speed.

1.. While this chapter was creepy as heck, I always felt there were little moments in it where each of the LIs got to show their personality. Did you have any favorite moments (whether you're romancing them or not) for Angel, Eli, Shannon or Troy? What about MC?
2.. Did you read the journal? What were your thoughts on it?
3.. If it's your first readthrough, did you see the end coming? If it's not, tell us how you felt the first time you read that, and how does it compare now that you know what was happening?
4.. Share your general thoughts of the story so far - anything you like, just talk :)
1.. While this chapter was creepy as heck, I always felt there were little moments in it where each of the LIs got to show their personality. Did you have any favorite moments (whether you're romancing them or not) for Angel, Eli, Shannon or Troy? What about MC?
I did the romance scenes with Eli and Troy. I loved how tender Eli's scenes were—they were just very domesticated and showed them working so well as a team. Troy's scenes were more playful, which is on point.
2.. Did you read the journal? What were your thoughts on it?
I did. It was so sad. Realizing the poor guy probably killed/attacked the person he loved is just tragic. :( Also, very reflective of what happened with Zoe's fathers.
3.. If it's your first readthrough, did you see the end coming? If it's not, tell us how you felt the first time you read that, and how does it compare now that you know what was happening?
I wasn't shocked on my first playthrough - well, not at the mutiny. The fact the he contacted Blackstock - that surprised me. I still hate the fucker. lol
4.. Share your general thoughts of the story so far - anything you like, just talk :)
This is where I started getting a little grumbly at PB being PB. I mean, it's a good story overall, but they just got stupid (as per usual.) Like MC would be devastated over the news about their sister... and "smashing cars" wouldn't help that even a little bit. The fact that this was included at all was like the dumbest thing ever.
I really want to rewrite some of these scenes in the near future.

Okay, this was an action-packed chapter!! Agree with all of you – I wish our “choices” would have given us a better leg up. I mean how did the zombies breach the perimeter so easily?? I do love the bit with the Raiders’ cars and Ironmount knights fighting off the drones on horseback.
2. Did anyone surprise you during this chapter... by either doing more than you thought they could in the face of such danger, or by not doing as much as you imagined they would.
Shannon’s fear grenades really came in handy! Was not anticipating that my first play-through. Also, Angel and that flamethrower 🤩 our girls came through.
3. Your thoughts on May during this chapter? (I'm leaving that very general on purpose.)
People might hate me but - I don’t think my MC should have spent so much time looking for her. She’s the leader, her time would have been better spent… leading the defenses. But no, PB had her sprinting around the perimeter looking for a lost girl. Why weren’t the Sunflower Creek people looking over all the kids? What else were they doing – certainly not helping us fight off the zombies… I feel for May, but this felt OOC…

Hey, y'all, thanks for your ongoing patience w/ me. The flu has knocked me on my ass this week, so I'm just catching up now. I will be posting the Chapter 17 group discussion later today. :)
Feel free to discuss whatever you want, not limited to these questions... but keep in mind that some people have not read the whole book yet, so put any future spoilers below a read more/page break.
Be respectful of all! Different opinions aren't only allowed, they're encouraged! But be polite to others.
Remember, if you post any screenshots, etc., be sure to tag @wakethedead-group-re-read so I can reblog here.
You can discuss all week - it's not limited to just today! Any questions, just shoot me an ask!
If you want to be removed from the tag list, or tagged in future posts, please let me know!

Discussion questions:

Shannon impressed me in this chapter. Even though she was in that hive, battling her own fears, she had the integrity to collect samples to take back with her to study.
MC's friendship with Troy ... showing support for each other through like past experiences at the Tower.
Eli's support for MC throughout the chapter showed their deep connection.
All 5 of them worked together as a team to find their missing colonists.
It was heartbreaking when May was found. The only living survivor.
2.. Did you read the journal? What were your thoughts on it?
Yes, that was creepy as hell as she described the changes she was undergoing and bring pulled toward the hive. Gradually transforming into a drone.
3.. If it's your first readthrough, did you see the end coming? If it's not, tell us how you felt the first time you read that, and how does it compare now that you know what was happening?
No, not yet. Still holding out for a cure to be found.

It is definitely not what I expected. I enjoy the connection of the main 5 characters. I am still holding out for MC and Eli to have a future in this changed world. (I am a sucker for happy endings 🤷♂️)
