I’ve been a fan of Kill Hannah since I was about 13 years old. I had always wondered what it would be like to hang with Mat Devine, and if he was anything like the person he would have his fans believe he is via social media. One year ago today, I semi-officially started working with Mat. I know that there are others out there who are as curious as I was about him, so I decided to put together a short list of hilarious and interesting experiences from my time with him:
1. Mat loves to smuggle wine into anyplace he can. We have discreetly gotten drunk in various coffee shops, several fast food restaurants, an outdoor mall, and a grocery store.
2. He’s very particular about ordering food. Every time we go through a drive-thru, he leans over me to place his own order into the intercom.
Actually, he’s very particular about everything; he knows exactly what he wants in almost every situation, and he will rarely settle for anything else.
3. Mat once brought an egg into the post office.
4. The first time Mat ever called me was 6 months after I started working with him. He was standing outside the building I was in. The first thing he says to me is, “I need wine badly.”
5. I was dropping Mat off at a studio session one day and his phone had died. I had to text Elias for the address of the studio, and afterward, Elias decided I needed to know some very vital things:
I didn’t tell Mat about this conversation, yet a couple of weeks later, I was sitting in my car while Mat jumped out to order food. He came back and handed me half of it, along with a mayo packet. I couldn’t help sending Elias a picture of the mayo coupled with the phone charger I had bought for Mat:
After eating, Mat came back to the car, got in, and threw a handful of mayo packets into my center console.
I dropped him off later that day, and as I was driving away, he yelled, “TAKE CARE OF MY MAYO!”
6. Mat’s texts are hilarious.
7. Someone requested that I write about what Mat smells like. This varies from day to day, and sometimes throughout the day. I have been blessed (cursed?) with the nose of a bloodhound, so poor Mat is always worried that I am constantly tolerating his odor. His usual cologne, according to him, is “some bullshit”. It smells mostly of vanilla and is very strong and sweet. As far as without cologne, he once described himself as smelling like “an afghan rug that someone forgot about”. This might be true. Also, Mat calls my unique sense of smell my “nose palate”.
8. Mat’s compliments usually come in the form of possible insults.
I followed up with, “Did you just call me a tool?”
9. Mat is obsessed with Boston Market.
10. Mat gave me a bunch of house keys once, and said, “Put these in your purse. I’ll explain later.”
11. One time, Mat and I were sitting in a café. He went out to make a phone call and came back with an H&M bag.
A few months later, he did the exact same thing. At the same café.
This past year has been a whirlwind. A lot of laughs, tears, frustrations, and excitements. Mat amazes me every day, and I am so honored to get to be able to spend my days with such an incredible and unique person. Mat may not be exactly everything he looks to be online, but he’s pretty damn close… definitely something special.
