Day Three - Walking
As I mentioned previously, we live in North Austin and work in North Austin. But more precisely, I live about 1.2 miles from work, door-to-door. I have lived this close to work for as long as we have lived in our new house. Over the last two years, I have never walked to work and have only road my bike 3 times. Its pathetic, I know. But I am working on it now.
On the third day of no car, my husband dropped me off at work on his way. He offered to drop me off with my bike, so I could ride home, but I thought that was silly. I can walk a mile, it is not that far. He was more concerned for my safety. Unfortunately, in October, when I was finishing up a run, I was followed for about half a mile, with multiple turns. I knew the car was following me after the second u-turn it had to make to stay on my path. It was scary needless to say. So, my husband wanted me to take my mace pepper spray with me if I was going to walk home, just to be safe.
Well, oops! I was on a call with a client on my way out the door and barely remembered to grab a house key, let alone lunch, breakfast, and mace. It all worked out. I made it home, without any issues, after 26 minutes in the 80 degree sun. I don’t know if walking will be an option during the summer, when it is 106 out, but we’ll see.
Day 3... in the books.

Day Two - public transportation
If you are familiar with Austin, you know that public transportation isn’t great. We have a rail, that runs only during business hours, and only once an hour. We have a bus system, but stops aren’t as convenient as you’d like. But, I am going to try to make it work.
We live about 1.3 miles from the closest MetroRail stop and about .75 miles from the closest MetroRapid stop. With a bike, this is not an unreasonable distance, but not the best for walking.
On my second day without a car, I had scheduled a happy hour with a friend. I needed a convenient location near public transportation or close enough to my work that I could ride my bike. The Domain would have been easiest for me, but not so convenient for my friend traveling from downtown office. So I suggested Black Star Co-op. It is located at the Crestview stop of the MetroRail and across the street from a MetroRapid Stop.
I rode my bike to work that day, which was a nice 13 minute morning workout. Afterwork, I rode my bike the 3 blocks over to the train station and headed to Black Star. We sat outside enjoying one of the best times of year in Austin, SPRING! It is the perfect temperature and perfect for patio drinking.
After drinks, I took the MetroRapid north. I rode my bike from the bus stop to my house. I almost got hit by a car, who decided to run a red light while I was crossing in the crosswalk. Luckily nothing happened. Made it home by 9:00pm.

Day One
Cars2go may be my newest mode of transportation. On my first day without a car, I had to head to the Texas Capitol for work. Both my husband and I work in and live in North Austin. The Capitol is in central Austin, about 12 miles away. When I decided to give up my car, I got a Cars2go membership. Unfortunately, living in North Austin, we aren’t in the ‘home area’ for Cars2go. So the only time I can use it, is if I can get dropped off at a car (semi-defeats the purpose).
When I needed to get to the Capitol, I had my husband drop me off at a cars2go spot that was conveniently located on his way to work. I then took the car and found a cars2go spot right in front of the Capitol! At the end of the day, there was a car within 2 blocks of the Capitol that I took over to Stay Gold for the Austin Music Video Premiere Series, where I met my husband. When the even was over, we went home in one car.
Cars2go cost me $20 that day. Not the best for savings purposes. Usually I pay $20 in gas for almost 2 weeks. However, I would have saved an additional $1.40 on car insurance for the day.

The Experiment
Giving up my car for a month.
Two weeks ago my car shut off at 10pm while visiting Houston. My key got locked into the ignition and I couldn’t turn anything on. Luckily, we have AAA and they came out and jumped my car without any issue. I was promptly told my battery is very old and its time to replace. No big deal. That is only $80, right? Sure, if it were only $80 that would be fine. But that is $80 on top of the $1500 worth of work my car needs. I immediately called my husband and told him “I want to get rid of my car!”
My 2005 Chevy Cobalt has been a great little car, but it is nearing its end. Kelly Bluebook values my car between $1400 and $2400. So clearly it is not worth the repairs. But I am also not ready to get a new car yet. Mostly, I don’t want the added monthly payment. Right now, we are a two car family with zero car payments. So, to me, the only options seems to be, get rid of the car! (Maybe a little dramatic, but I do that sometimes)
To see if we can actually live with one car, we are pretending my car doesn't exist. It is parked in our garage, and for 30 days, I will not drive it (only if absolutely necessary). And over those 30 days I will be keeping track of the amount of money spent and saved. At the end of the day, that is what I am most interested in. I will also keep track of any other benefits that will come with it, like reducing my environmental impact and health benefits of walkings or biking, though this was not my first intention (secondary benefits of saving money by going green).
Let the experiment begin!
Welcome!
Join me on a personal journey as I share with you my many life experiments, my everlasting soul searching, and my general thoughts on day-to-day life in Austin, TX.
To get us started, here is a little bit about me...
I am a lawyer. It sounds like a dirty word, I know. But I swear of I am a honest lawyer working to protect the rights of others. I started out as a teacher and went to law school to change the system. Figure out a way to improve the lives of all children. I’ve been practicing for just under 3 years and still working towards that mission.
I am married. My husband and I are high school sweethearts. What that really means, is that we have been together for almost half of our lives!
I have two cats. I would have more if I lived on a ranch and could save all of the homeless cats. I am a self proclaimed cat lady. In fact, on my 30th birthday I got a tattoo of my cats! Everything revolves around them and they totally run this house.
I am looking forward to this new adventure!
