since this is a twd au, there is obviously spoilers! the au takes place between seasons 6-11, so if you're on season 8 and don't want to see whats after the saviours yet, maybe finish that first!!!!

there are very triggering topics involved. this obviously includes child death, murder, suicidal thoughts, self harm, torture, SA , eating disorders (none were mentioned in the timeline, but there are canon events involving them), and everything else you'd expect in a zombie apocalypse

yes this is cringe. i am aware, and i do not care!!!! there are ocs, and there are crackships, and if you don't like that, i suggest turning away, or maybe even give it a try. its not so bad fam i promis

so bad at posting Happy i immediately went badk 2 my Roots

so when loren came back from commonwealth, he could obviously tell that griffin was… off. at first, he didn’t look too much into it- they probably just really missed him, right? and plus, he was still recovering from the entire prison arc, so he couldn’t focus that much, anyway. but after a couple months or so, he did start noticing something about griffin. if they weren’t with him, they got oddly snappy. they were louder, broader with opinions and had a sort of edge that loren’s never seen on them before. he suspected it had something to do with the time he was gone, but they never spoke about what they did during that time. all loren knew was that 1, they were really depressed and 2, they did ‘bad things.’ did he ever get to learn what said bad things were? nope, griffin won’t tell him.

don’t take it the wrong way, loren has tried talking to them over and over. but every time he does, griffin would just evade the questions, and look at him with eyes sickenly in love, and loren would lose all sense of what he has to do. how could he potentially ruin their spirits when they looked at him like that? whenever he finds himself leaning back into their embrace despite the questions he’s been itching to ask, he feels awful. selfish, even. griffin wont let him take care of them, show concern for them, and he’s not fighting against it? they could be going through anything, and here he was, letting them hold him close.

loren knows it’s stupid, and he knows how unbelievably wrong it is, but in his head, he separates the griffin he used to know, and the griffin he’s faced with now- promptly naming them ‘Old Griffin’ and ‘New Griffin.’ he hates himself for this, but he can’t help but compare every time griffin does something loren knows they would have never even thought about back then. it’s not like he loves one more than the other- he loves griffin for everything, whatever hells they’ve been through. it’s just… sometimes he can’t find the same person behind those eyes.

this separation slowly backed away as the months drained by, and he spent longer time back home. it was basically gone by the time griffin finally came clean about what they’ve done, and loren was starting to believe it would never come again. but then the warehouse came, and griffin changed again. loren was there this time, thank god, but on most days it felt like he wasn’t. it was like when he came back from commonwealth but this time, instead of clinging onto him, griffin started avoiding. it was whiplash; loren could pick apart that they didn’t want to hurt him, and so kept their distance, but it hurt so much more than whatever blow they could have landed. the Old Griffin, New Griffin mentality came back, ten times worse. Old Griffin wouldn’t have avoided him like this, Old Griffin would have talked to him, let him help, cry into his shoulder.

but this was New Griffin. New Griffin yelled, New Griffin didn’t dare to touch anything that could be used as a weapon, New Griffin snapped at everyone, didn’t smile as much, didn’t do anything Old Griffin used to love anymore. loren made the mistake of confronting them about it, and he got a taste of what they’ve been giving everyone during his absence. loren never thought it’d hurt as much when griffin snapped, but it did. it hurt more than he could imagine.

Old Griffin wouldn’t do that.
