another fun thing from my passing into the west today
For anyone that doesn't know, Scuppernong and Muscadines are the grapes that are native to North America! They are found growing wild all over the south where they thrive, but most wild ones are very small with not a lot of flesh around the seeds.
Muscadines and Scuppernongs (correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they're the same species just two different varieties or cultivars -- muscadines are usually the Black/Purple color ones, while Scuppernongs are usually the Bronze/Green ones), when bought at the grocery store at least, are very very large grapes with a thick skin, huge amounts of flavor, and 2 - 4 inedible seeds at the center.
When we buy them at the store, I usually cut them in half and scoop out the seeds so I can properly eat a handful at a time without worrying about seeds lol.
They're usually available late summer into fall seasonally, and if you like to garden you can start them from seed, as long as you have a long term plan and study trellis available! There's a few different cultivars available online as well if you want to buy a plant with gaurenteed genetics, but I am a cheapskate and I refuse to throw away perfectly good seeds :)
