The ICJ has made its first ruling on South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide. It will take the case to completion, which will take years, and order as provisional measures that Israel must cease and punish statements of incitement, and more significantly take all measures within its power to prevent genocidal acts. This is not the complete cessation of hostilities South Africa asked for, but it is still incredibly significant, at least symbolically. Israel have already said they will not let The Hague stop them, but if states like the US do not put serious pressure on them to uphold the ICJ’s ruling, this will make a mockery of the whole international order and any pretence of moral authority the West still feels able to claim. Hopefully this provides some relief for the Palestinian people, and at least frightens Israel into being less blatantly murderous.
